Wishful Homesteader

I had a pretty easy day today.  It was too hot to really do much.  Even in the house, it was hot.  Dave put the air conditioner in this morning, but it isn't big enough to do too much good in any other part of the house.  You pretty much have to be sitting right in front of it.  After it cooled down some, around 6:00, I went outside and weeded and watered my garden.

I went grocery shopping today, too.  I didn't do as bad as I thought I was going to.  I spent $44, and I got a big head of cauliflower, some bananas, a big steak for on the grill, a pack of pork chops, 3 bags of cheese, 3 gallons of milk, 2 loaves of bread, 2 bottles of hot sauce, 8 bottles of marinade, a bag of tortilla chips, 6 bags of pasta, 2 kids' toothbrushes (Cameron picked Chicken Little and Emily got Aslan), a pack of Pull-Ups, 2 pasta salad kits (made with fresh cheese and veggies), a pack of pepperoni...I'm sure there's probably more, but I can't think of anything else.  It wasn't much more, anyway.  The kids also conned my mom into buying them a pack of cookies, a bag of pretzels and some soda.

I had a pretty good mail day.  I got lots of catalogs that went straight into the garbage, a sample of Dove lotion, a booklet, my cookie cutter collectors club newsletter, and an 8x10 photo I won in an instant win.  Since in that instant win you upload the pictures onto the Kodak webste, and they print them out and send them to you, I ordered it for my grandmother.  It is a picture of her with all 3 of her great-granchildren.

I got a $10 Amazon.com gift certificate for a survey I did, and I used it to get a book about lasagna gardening.

Dave's last birthday gift finally arrived, a few days after his birthday.  I had ordered him some parts for an old car he's fixing up, and 1 of them was on backorder.  That arrived today, and he got some money for his birthday that he used to buy another part he needed.

Dave took all of our holiday decorations out of Emily's room today, and put them in the garage.  Emily has tons more space in her room now.  I paid the bills that we had at the moment, and I called Verizon about that 10 cent bill they sent us.  I asked if I could possibly pay it over the phone because I wasn't wasting a stamp to send a check for 10 cents.  The lady laughed hysterically for about 5 minutes.  She said it would cost $3.50 to pay over the phone, so she would just delete the 10 cents and we'd call it even.  I asked why they didn't just take it out of the $28 check they sent me, and she laughed again.  It took me aout 20 minutes to talk to a real person, too, because you have to type your account number in the phone, and some of my account number is LETTERS!  At first I typed in the number keys that corresponded with the letters, and that didn't work, so I skipped over the letters, an it said my account number was not valid.  I figured that if I just kept pushing buttons, they'd think I was a complete idiot and let me talk to a real person.  It worked!  A complete idiot I'm not, though, and I got it all straightened out!!

Oh, those phone systems drive me crazy!!! I'm terrible too.... I just keeping pressing zero until I get a real person... 95% of the time it works, but every once in a while, I'll run across a company where that won't and they make you fiddle with the darn thing. I think Verizon is one of them. It's enough to drive you insane!
