Would Jesus teach the periodic table?

08:09, 12 April 2007 .. 5 comments .. Link

I’ve been thinking about this for a long time now, really since we first began homeschooling some twelve or thirteen years ago. As I mentioned in another entry here, I’m reading (finished last night) “In His Steps”; and it’s really caused the old brain to start working.

I’ve never been a go-with-the-flow kind of person anyway, so this questioning is right in line with my character; not to mention, I believe, in line with God’s command to be separate from this world.

Would Jesus be concerned with teaching his children the periodic table? I mean, are all the subjects we’re concerned about teaching our children REALLY the things we should be concerned about teaching them? Is learning Algebra really important or should we be far more concerned about teaching our children to walk with the Lord….how to serve Him, to serve others, to witness to others, to pray, etc.?

Do the Amish have it right teaching their children the basics like reading, writing and arithmetic and ending schooling long before we in the “English” world?

I had a traditional, public school career; and I have to say that I’ve become quite convinced that most of it has never served me well. I look back on it and think how unnecessary most of the information I was required to learn actually was. I’ve never used, nor remembered, most of it. In fact, I’ve found that much of what I learned in public school (other than the basics) has been an obstacle in learning to become a keeper-at-home.

I learned to value worldly intelligence, which has definitely hindered my walk. God tells us that the intelligence of this world is foolishness, and I’ve found that to be so. How many times I wish I hadn’t been indoctrinated in those early years with ideas like feminist thought. I battle that ingrained way of thinking for so many years now.

I guess my point is this. Isn’t the most important thing I can do - to teach my children how to walk with God and live a simple life serving Him? How does Algebra fit into this equation.

As usual, I’d love to hear your thoughts. This is an area of our lives that I’m exploring and trying to find God’s will on.

Many blessings to you and your house!

Agree, the most important thing you can ever live in front of your children is a life dedicated to Christ. Scripture talks SO much about the "Foundation".

If you look in Scripture, there is math, even algebra!

I agree that everything we learned in school was counter to being a homemaker. But, we were in public schools, where God is not allowed!! We are so blessed to have our kids home with us to 'train them up right'.

Thank to the Lord for our freedom.
Thank a solider for fighting to keep us free to homeschool!!

I agree with Laura, that it is more how we teach it then the concept of teaching. Jesus if you look at Scripture was very knowledgeable by the age of 12. I think we need to teach our children all that we can so that they are not seeking knowledge outside of our home. The Bible talks over and over about seeking knowledge. Ofcourse, it is referring to the Scriptures but I think we are ingrained to seek knowledge. I want that knowledge to be found within my walls.

maybe he wouldn't have... then. but He was given an education perfect for the world in which He lived. He was taught a trade, and everything needed to practice it - as well as knowledge for His mission on this earth.
I agree that the periodic table (which gives me a headache whenever I even SEE it) is not the most useful thing in my life. but... as I turn more into self-suffiecency and making my own soap, understanding genetically-modified crops and chemically-altered food, I am really starting to wish I had a better grasp on chemistry.
I think God has given us this knowledge - of periodic tables, alegebra, and even calculus (definatly something I studied that I have NEVER used!!!) - for the betterment of our lives and our world. we are told there is nothing new under the sun, so all this is NOT new, just re-remembered, if you will. you might not have ever used the above in your life, but with a knowledge of this, your child could see how to cure cancer or arrange a better, more natural pest-control for farmers or who knows! even if you teach it to him/her once, and he/she is not interested, you have offered a glimpse into a subject that provides choices for a well-educated person.
just my long-rambling thought!

I do think character is more important than academics.

However, knowledge is fun. I LIKE knowing things and being able to discuss them with others.

I homeschool my kids and I focus on character and the Lord and I let them work out the subjects (beyond the basic stuff) that they would like to know more about.

Most important, though, is that you do what you hear God telling you to teach!

Best wishes,

Patti

I've been wrestling with this too. I meant to post yesterday to let you know that I've been thinking along the same lines.

God has allowed us to have a great deal of knowledge, but we can't assume that He necessarily desires us to have all of this knowledge--not to mention the fact that we have a misunderstanding of many things. With the Fall came the knowledge of good and evil--they didn't even know that they were naked...I agree with the other poster that some aspects of chemistry are important with regard to understanding soap making, bread making, etc. We certainly can't think that we have a complete handle on everything that is taking place. Unlike that poster, I don't think God gave us chemistry so we could create pills and poisons to lessen the affects of His ordained curse. There will never be anything to get rid of pests, and it doesn't seem like there ought to be. We brought that on ourselves. I would venture to say that we, as a society, have brought cancer and many other diseases upon ourselves as well...mostly, because we thought we understood chemistry. The knowledge of man certainly is foolishness to our all-knowing Creator, God!

Anyway, may God grant you wisdom as you too, wrestle with these thoughts. Dig into His Word that He might speak to you. I'll pray for you, and I ask that you do the same for me, if you don't mind. Thanks! God Bless!

Warmly,
Elizabeth
