Giving 3 days straightWe sure do know how to stretch out a good thing here. We’ll be celebrating Thanksgiving for 3 days! Can you imagine the leftovers? The good thing is that I will be contributing to the various meals not making everything for 3 days. Whew! Thanksgiving Day will be spent at my parents’ home. I’ll be bringing spoonbread and my famous Triple Fudge Brownies. Mr. Steady will be fixing up his scrumptious Dirty Mashed Potatoes. I think the girls and I may make a loaf of bread too. The Day After Dinner, as it is now known, is spent with Mr. Steady’s parents. We cherish this quirky tradition as it means we get to spend some great quality time with his parents (it’s a gi-normous family). A few years ago we sucked Mr. Steady’s sister and kids into the tradition- since her hubby is always working that day. Foodwise: we try to keep to serving leftovers- another tradition. Mr. Steady does fry a turkey breast because we just love it. We have leftover mashed potatoes and spoonbread, his mama brings cranberries, a pie and a Jell-O salad. His sister brings her amazing potato rolls and at least one veggie side dish. I laughingly make a boxed stuffing mix to round it all out. This year my sister and her hubby have invited the family to their home for the Day After After Dinner. [This is the “off year” that my siblings each spend with their in-laws on TG day.] Since this is a first I don’t know what the plan is. I am currently waiting for my sister to inform me of what I am bringing to the event besides myself and 4 other hungry souls. I have to admit I’m getting a bit antsy as I’m working on my grocery list. I’m a bit of a nervous-ervous. I don’t normally grocery shop during Thanksgiving week. But Mr. Steady and I are hoping for some better sales in the local flyers and so we have put off some of the holiday shopping. Yikes! We made this week a pantry week so that we could save this week’s grocery money, combine it with next week’s and hopefully stock up on some things. Still, it makes me feel like I’m waiting until the last minute to get all my ducks in a row . . . . Today's Tips --- Fruitcakes (start them now)
Today's Tips:
Today's Recipes: Here are 4 fruitcake recipes that you might try. The first is not your usual fruitcake, but I thought it was perfect for our web site (Poor mans fruitcake ;-) ) and the second is a more traditional one. Number 3 is a no bake and the fourth, (No Fail fruitcake) I dedicate it to all the first timers.
Poor man's Fruitcake 1 cup butter or margarine Preheat oven to 325°. Grease and line two 9x5 loaf pans with brown paper. Sift flour, and spices. Cut gum drops into fourths, and mix those, the raisins and nuts with part of flour mix. Cream together butter, sugars and eggs. Alternately, add the flour mix and applesauce. Add soda to hot water and mix it into the batter. Then add the vanilla. Add gumdrops, raisins, and nuts mixture. Bake for 2 hours. If you use a tube pan instead of loaf pans bake 30-40 minutes longer.
Christmas Wreath Fruitcake (Don't forget that you can take out anything like the dates or fruits and replace them with equal amounts of something you prefer.) 1 1/2 cup raisins Preheat oven to 300°. Mix first 8 ingredients. In separate bowl cream butter, sugar and add lemon zest, eggs and lemon juice. Mix into flour mixture. Bake for 2 hours.
No Bake Fruitcake 14 oz. sweetened condensed milk Grease a 9x13 loaf pan. Mix everything well and pour into the pan. Cover and let stand in a cool place for 1 week to age.
Never Fail Fruitcake This is a big recipe but you can easily half it. Using half, you can make 22 cupcakes but, if you do, only bake them for 40 minutes. 1 lb. candied cherries, chopped Preheat oven to 300°. Grease two 9x13 pans and line with brown paper or parchment paper. Mix everything very well and press into pans. Bake 1 1/2 hours. Cool and remove from pan. This was all taken from my newsletter: Somedays I wonder----how I get through the day in one piece--LOL--a few weeks ago I was doing dishes and dropped my cell phone in the water(we only use cell phones)--believe it or not it still worked--I let it dry over night--put the battery back in and it worked--well except for the camera--which I never used anyway-- yesterday I was out feeding rabbits, gathering eggs and what have ya and I noticed my phone was not clipped onto the waist of my skirt like usual--I figured I left it in the house--got the chores done and began looking for it--not in the house--I retraced my steps outside and there it was--smashed into the dirt--LOL--I usually drive to the feed shed and pen when its cold out and I had ran over it--it looked fine so I figured it would still work--not a chance!--so I suspended dd's phone and put my number over on her's until after Christmas when I can afford to get another one--I do have the phone insurance so it will only be 50.00 to get another one but right now I am saving everything we can--And something I realized is that I had all my phone numbers programed into my phone--and I do not know the numbers--Made me realize how I too have been bitten by the technology bug to the point I do not have my oldests dd's cell phone number memorized or even my own sisters--Soooooooo, one good thing that has come from it is that I will now do better keeping track of phone numbers of those that are close to me--Boy! Have we as a society gotten lazy or what? No wonder kids are not learning things anymore--everything is programed for them--just push a button and call a friend--no more dialing the number!--What an eye opener to me!--Our brains are slowly wasting away all in the name of technology! Time for me at least to begin using the built in computer God blessed me with--MY BRAIN! What a concept--LOL-- ~Kris Wednesday Nov 19thThis week seems to be poking by for me. I'm not sure why, maybe because it's cold outside and we're not getting out to do much? I'm not sure, but I do know I hate when time pokes by!Jerm told me last night that he may have to go back to PA for another week the week after Thanksgiving. I'm SO hoping he doesn't have to, but if he does, oh well, not much we can do about it. I guess this is a downside to getting a new job with a company on the ground floor. They're gonna be the first people working so they have no one here to learn their jobs off of. I've started reading Created to Be His Help Meet. It is a very good read so far, I think I'm into Chapter 5 now. I didn't read any last night because I Was so tired when I went to bed. I'll probably be tired tonight too because I woke up at 5:15 this morning anf we have church tonight so it'll prolly be close to 9 before we even get back home. Oh well, guess I should get started on my day! Blessings, ~*Becca*~ Wednesday review Today I'm reviewing a book called The Missing Link: Found. This was written by 17 year-old Christina Gerwitz, which in itself I think is awesome, it's not very often that you hear of a teenager writing books and getting published! It is a story about the Murphy kids and their adventures in finding the Missing Link. I can't give away too much about the story, you just have to read it for yourself! This book is considered Youth Fiction, so younger children may or may not enjoy the story. It is 197 pages so I'm not sure I could see a younger child reading it all by themselves. My kids couldn't get into it a whole lot, but I found it to be a nice read at bedtime (which is about the only time I do have to read for myself!) We used it during storytime for school. So I can recommend it as a good read for teens and adults, but maybe not so much for the younger crowd. Media Angels has several other books to offer so head over and check them out! Happy Birthday...keeping it simpleIt has been a balmy 11-12 degrees (Celsius) these last couple of days and the sun has been shining...I thought perhaps being November it would be time to slow down and enjoy the solitude and quietness of what soon will be winter....evenings by the fire and homemade White Hot Chocolate....
But no such luck...(well, except for the Hot chocolate)....I seem to be just as busy as before. It's a good busy though. Today is our daughter Tianna's 18th birthday. We celebrated as a family on Sunday, as today she is celebrating with her boyfriend and his family. How time flies...the days turn into weeks and then into years and before you know it, they are grown up and now of legal age to vote:-)
Yesterday we had visitors in our yard...now on a given day between September and October, I would have been less than thrilled to have such neighbours...but yesterday was okay. Yet, I couldn't believe the dog did nothing but sit and watch...lousy guard dog!
We also have "Simon" our friendly neighbourhood woodpecker....he comes every morning.
Last night Audrey and I attended an "Client appreciation" evening at Karisa's work...it was great fun. We each won some wonderful door prizes and went home with lots of other lovely gifts. It was nice getting out without the kids...sometimes being at home without a break can be hard...especially having Stephanie 24/7...so an evening out "alone" was wonderful and refreshing. It doesn't happen that often, but when it does...and no one better to party with other than "Audrey". Today I continued bringing out our Christmas decorations and begin the ardous task of preparing my home for Christmas. My plan this year is "keep it simple"...as is the theme of my thoughts of late. So quite a bit of my time today was spent going through all the bins of decorations that I have accumulated over the past 24 years...I managed to package up two Rubbermaid bins to give away...it was very refreshing to say the least. And since purging was on my brain today, I also gave away one TV and one Fax machine. Dh did mention that he didn't want to come up and find out I gave away the kids or "the bed". I also will be posting a few recipes over the next couple of posts...as Hopeful Heart has asked for some recipes. So here is my first one....
Fluffy Buttermilk Cake This recipe comes from my mom.I have made this so many times that I cannot count. This is definitely a family favourite. 1 cup shortening 2 cups sugar 4 eggs separated 2 cups flour 1 teaspoon brown sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon soda 1 cup buttermilk 2 teaspoons lemon extract 1/2 cup chopped nuts Cream shortening and 1-1/3 cups sugar. Add egg yolks and 1/4 cup buttermilk. Beat well. Sift flour, baking soda and salt. Add the rest of buttermilk. Add 1/4 cup sugar to the egg whites, beat until stiff. Butter tube pan well. Sprinkle the bottom with nuts. Add batter. Bake approx. 1 hour at 350 degrees. Enjoy!
Christmas "get to know you"1.) Wrapping paper or gift bags? I have to say that every year I try and do something different in that department. One year I wrapped everything in brown mailing paper. Used raffia for ribbons, it was really pretty. 2.) Real tree or artificial? Most of the time it's artificial but this year I might get a real one. 3.) When do you put up the tree? A few days after Thanksgiving, around the weekend after. 4.)When do you take the tree down? The day after Christmas. 5.) Do you like eggnog? OH yes, but I can't have too much of it. 6.) Favorite gift recieved as a child? My Easy Bake Oven. It prepared me for my life as a mom, LOL. 7.)Hardest person to buy for? My husband, he is by far the hardest. He never tells me what he wants and then whatever I do get him, he always looks depressed. 8.)Easiest person to buy for? I would have to say that would be my wonderful daughter, Kristy. She loves anything that she didn't have to buy herself. LOL She loves old vintage things, so last year all she wanted was garage sale and thriftstore items. I had a blast shopping for her and she had a blast opening her gifts. 9.)Do you have a nativity scene? Yes a few small ones, but I would really love a nice one that I could set up on top of my entertainment center. 10.) Mail or e-mail christmas cards? Mail, with pretty Christmas stamps. 11.) Worst christmas gift you ever recieved? I would have to say a tread mill that my dh gave me one year. It was one of those manual ones. Lets just say it went back to the store. lol 12.) Favorite christmas movie? A Christmas Story. The "B B Gun Boy" as we call him, is in my top five movies of all time. 13.) When do you start shopping for christmas? Early November, sometimes sooner. 14.) Have you ever recycled a christmas present? Probably so. 15.) Favorite thing to eat at christmas? Cornbread dressing and turkey. 16.) Lights on the tree? Most years yes. 17.) Favorite christmas song? I'll Be Home for Christmas 18.) Travel at christmas or stay home? Always stay home, everyone comes to me. 19.) Can you name all of Santa's reindeer? Yes I can. 20.) Angel on top of tree or star? Old fashion quilted star. 21.) Open presents christmas eve or morning? Christmas Eve at the inlaws and Christmas morning at home. 22.) Most annoying thing about this time of year? The crowds. 23.) Favorite thing about this time of year? Baking goodies and the cooler weather. 24.) Favorite ornament theme or color? When my dad died 26 years ago, I made an ornament with his picture in it, so that would have to be my favorite one. 25.) Favorite food for christmas dinner? Same as #15. 26.) Favorite christmas tradition? Putting up the tree and drinking egg nog while listening to holiday music. 27.) What do you want for christmas this year. My family around me. Merry Christmas everyone!
Fires in CaliforniaI do not know if you see on your news things about California , but we are having major fires. We have 6 going and 3 of them are close around us. We live in Chino. Chino Hills was Chino to, until they changed it to Chino Hills ( it was always just called the hills) because they did not to live in a city that has a prison. Carbon canyon is also part of Chino Hills (Chino). We live a few miles form Diamond Bar and Corona. We have fires all around us. We are praying for the people who lost their homes and for all the people helping out. So many people lost it all. People were evacuated 3 miles from us. It has been very smokey and it looks like it snowed due to the ash. It is fall but we have been in the 90's. Hubby had such a hard time getting home from work on Friday. The 3 freeways were closed as was Carbon Canyon. It took him over 2.5 hours to drive the 17 miles home!! God Bless, mj Pictures of Marty's lifeI am posting more pictures of Marty. Marty as a pup:
As a young man:

As you all can see we love this guy a lot!! Marty was a part of all our lives everyday. I am still developing rolls of film. As I find pictures of him I will post them. We miss him so very much. P.s here is one of the poor guy dressed as Snow White:
God Bless, mj Abe Lincoln, Thanksgiving and Divine InterventionHere's something I found and thought it would be a great lesson for our children with Thanksgiving coming... {KW<><}... In the White House, Abe Lincoln was pacing the floor of his office. He felt more troubeld than he had ever felt before. The fate of the Union was at stake. He felt as if he were almost alone in his concern for the outcome. Friends and aides appeared to be almost panic-stricken. Abe felt that this was the most critical hour of the [Civil] war, perhaps the most critical hour in the entire history of the United States. In desperation he left his office, went into this room and locked the door. There he fell before a chair. With his head in his hands, he wept and prayed. Now, more than at any other time in his life he turned to God. In deep anguish he told God that he had done all he could. He pleaded for help. There was nothing more that he could do. He must leave the result of the battle in the hands of God. He now knew that if his country was to be saved, it would be only because God willed it. It was a heartbreaking hour of prayer. When he unlocked the door and came out of his room he felt that a great burden had suddenly been rolled off his shoulders. His intense anxiety and torturing concern had been relieved. He felt a quiet and calm trustfullness... On his desk was a copy of the Thanksgiving Proclamation. He had proclaimed the last Thursday in November as a day of national Thanksgiving. The nation had never before had such an annual Thanksgiving Day and he had decided that it was time the nation remembered in a special day what God had done. Now he read slowly the proclamation: We have been the recipients of the choistest bounties of heaven; we have grown in numbers, wealth, and power as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. We have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us. Tears slipped down his cheeks as he read these words, for he believed in them deeply. It was because of this belief that he ordered the Treasury Department to engrave the words, In God We Trust, on American coins. As he was sitting at his desk, thinking about these things, an aide rushed in and excitedly exclaimed, "There's good news from the battle at Gettysburg, Sir..." But in spite of this great victory, his days were filled, dealing with generals, listening to the problems of many citizens, and handling endless administrative details. For help he turned to God through the Bible and in prayer. Almost daily now, he felt the need to go to his room to pray. More and more, he became conscious of the work of God in the affairs of men. Writing to a friend, Byron Sutherland, one day, he said, I believe we are all agents and instruments of Divine Providence. I hold myself in my present position and with the authority invested in me, as an instrument of Providence. I am conscious every moment that all I am and all that I have are subject to the control of a higher power, and that power can use me or not use me in any manner and at any time as in His wisdom might be pleasing to Him. One day, Mr. Chittenden, the register of the Treasury, asked him if he believed that God actually directed national affairs. With a deep feeling of emotion, he replied, The the Almighty does make use of human agencies, and directly intervenes in human affairs, is one of the plainest statements of the Bible...I have many evidences of His direction, many instances when I have been controlled by some other power than my own will, that I cannont doubt that this power comes from above. ~~~Reprinted from Honest Abe by Harry J.
