As homemakers, we are always looking for what is the most healthy "thing" we can give to our families. Thankfully eating real, whole foods is the "latest" trend in diets. This goes along with the Al Gore going green concept. The thing is that real foods is what we are supposed to eat. Genesis and Leviticus give us specific guidelines on what we are to eat. (If you are interested in specifics laid out in the Bible read Rex Russell, MD's book "What the Bible Says About Healthy Living). I was, ironically, sitting in my hematologists office on Wednesday and found this article in Time magazine http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1595245,00.html. It is 1 reporters investigation between which is better, locally grown foods or organic. Obviously locally grown organic food is the best option, but when not available, what do you choose? As homesteaders that grow their own food they know-local. Why? Check out Jeannette's blog at http://www.homesteadblogger.com/blessingsabound/ for a neat Youtube video on eating off your land. In shopping at Whole Foods you will find a wide variety of foods from as far away as New Zealand. It may be organic, but it has been on airplanes and trucks. How do you feel after traveling for thousands of miles. Fresh, certainly not. There is a thing called airplane hair, ya know. It's not pretty. Organic foods do not have pesticides. There are many studies that show that pesticides are toxins that can get into our lymph system and make us ill with a multitude of diseases, including cancer and alzheimers. However, organic foods that have been travelling a good distance without preservation could also make you sick. Just like if you have raw milk with great enzymes for about a week then afterwards you could get bacteria and parasites. Those homesteaders that are farmers, when deciding what to plant next Spring really consider doing an organic garden and sell to local stores or farmers markets. There could be BIG money in that. Let me know if you are in Atlanta! Blessings! ~Farrah |
