Movies

Posted in Family Life

After watching 2 minutes of the movie Saving Private Ryan, I have chosen to leave my husband and 13 year old in the living room.  That is by far THE most intense movie I have ever seen.  How is it that movies have come to this?  How is it that it is now acceptable to view anything and everything on movies, tv, and youtube?  Music is just as bad.  The 13 year old actually laughed at me the other day when in a car next to us was this vile rap music that was loud for 2 cities over to hear.  He had his window down so I rolled mine and while playing "I'll Fly Away" I yelled to this man, "does your Grandmother approve of this so-called music you listen to?".  He turned it down and rolled his window up without saying a word.  Anyway, I guess I'm on my soapbox tonight,  but I feel that as homemaker's it is our duty to govern what is in our house and vehicles.  We can't censor what other's do, but I for one do not want my kids to watch and see horrible things.

War movies, as long as they're accurate (as Saving Private Ryan), I can understand because these things did happen.  I think that's why this movie, Passion of the Christ, and Titanic really get to me.  I can't stand to see what traumatic and terrible events these cause people to endure.  I am incredibly sensitive and I actually feel how they feel.  Knowing that Jesus died with nails in his body and was tortured, hundred's of people have drowned in sunken ships, and war is horrific makes these movies unbearable for me to watch.

Give me Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, Steel Magnolias, and Meet Me in St Louis anyday.  Maybe I want to live in a fairyland, and through my movies and classic books I can escape.  Escape the dishes.  Escape the children arguing.  Escape a reality, though blessed, isn't Prince Edward Island.  Seeing violence, sexual immorality, and hearing curse words are not things to draw me in.

Sorry for my soapbox!

Blessings,

~Farrah

I also have a problem with Saving Private Ryan. With me it is the cursing. My Grandfather (who was in WWII) said they didn't talk like that. I understand the violence since, like you said, it did really happen, but it seems like the only way people know to show "feelings" is by cursing and taking the Lord's name in vain.
Don't even get me started on Titanic. We won't watch that one for many reasons. A better choice would be A Night To Remember or SOS Titanic.
I'll have to try the music thing next time we're driving. It isn't as bad now that we're back in Oklahoma.
