Gardening in Freezing Weather

How have your plants been faring this weather?  My Mother-in-law's tulips had started blooming and the snow killed them.  With tulips being a bulb she's going to have to dig them up and try again in the fall.  Tulips are so beautiful and I hate that for her.

I am planning on getting some strawberry hanging baskets.  I read that they only require 6 hours of sun and with trees surrounding our back yard that sounds like the best 1st plant to try in container gardening.  It is warming up this weekend, but by Sunday night it will be back in the 30's.  Do y'all think I should wait to get started?

Also, what types of flowers do you know that require little light?  I've used vinca's before and they flourished.  Other than that do you know of any?  I appreciate the help of experienced homesteaders!  I'm learning alot!

is if you have something blooming/emerging and then cold weather is forecast, that you cover it with straw or horticultural fleece (or newspaper or old net curtains work, if you don't have high winds!) and keep it warm til the cold weather passes. Of course if there are many, many plants, that's not the easiest thing to organise, but if a few choice blooms, you can wrap them up this way.
