Probably a stupid question...

How can you tell if an egg is any good?  We have been purchasing our eggs from a local farm so there is no sell by date.  I remember something about it floating in water.  Can y'all help me?

Mrs. Sarah Palin

Posted in soapbox

Graphic courtesy of www.allposters.com

For the past 2 weeks my husband and I have been engrossed in politics.  Yes my friends, it's the Olympics all over again!  Now that both the Democratic National Convention and the Republican National Convention are at an end the question is, who do you vote for?  In whom do you put your entire trust and faith to be a qualified person to run one of if not THE most powerful nation in the world?  Do you believe that Sen. Barak Obama or Sen. John McCain will run the country very well?  What if the Vice-President will have to step in as President.  Who do you believe will be most qualified to run our country, Gov. Sarah Palin or Sen. Joe Biden?

There is quite an uproar in the Christian community about Sarah Palin.  Being a Mother to 5 and a wife to 1 is she hurting someone by being VP?  Would she be putting the country at risk by not getting sleep at night because of her infant?  Would her husband be resentful for being the stay at home Dad and she gets all the glory?  Would she be able to take care of her grandbaby, baby, husband, and run/help run the entire country?  And, is she breaking rules instructed to her in the Bible by not letting her husband be head of household and she stay with the children?  This is what Doug Philips and Vodie Bauccham are saying.  If you are interested read Dr. Bauccham's blog post about Mrs. Palin http://www.voddiebaucham.org/vbm/Blog/Entries/2008/8/30_Did_McCain_Make_a_Pro-Family_Pick____.html.

My "current" view on this is that I think Mrs. Palin is a great speaker, a beautiful lady, smart and ambitious, and is doing what she thinks is best for our country and her family.  However, I do have concerns.  But, quite frankly, what is the alternative?  The alternative of Mr. Obama and Mr. Biden are certainly not suitable.  I have quite an intense dissatisfaction with Mr. Obama's views and think he will ruin America's, well what's left of them, moral fiber amongst other things.  So, maybe Mrs. Palin may not be putting her family first as dictated by God, but the actual possible President, John McCain will be the one running the country.  Unless something happens they will get my vote.

Blessings,

Going Away...

Posted in Family Life

Graphic courtesy of www.doverpublications.com

Tomorrow morning my ten year old son and I are heading up North. We are going to visit my parents in Kentucky. Friday night, when we arrive, we'll just relax with my parents with a nice home cooked dinner (finally not cooked by yours truly ;0)).

Saturday morning my Mother and I are having brunch with my old Girl Scout troop. Believe it or not after 13 years we are all still good friends. Actually as we have gotten older I think it is very important to grow closer to your childhood friends. With my living over 400 miles away and family obligations I know that I have not made enough of an effort to keep in touch. Now, I am determined that whenever possible, to get together when I am in town (they all live in the same city).

Saturday evening my youngest cousin, not second cousin mind you, is getting married in an outdoor ceremony. It is not supposed to rain, but dear me, it is supposed to be 90 degrees! She is getting married young, but she has such a good head on her shoulders that I know she and her intended will do just grand.

Sunday morning we will probably attend church (if we are not too tired from the wedding and subsequent one and one-half hour return drive) then we usually go to lunch after church. Late that afternoon we are to go to my paternal Grandmother's 87th birthday party! I have a great relationship with both of my Grandmother's and for that I am thankful and blessed.

Monday morning Bryson and I will headed back home to the Peach state! I hope we have time either on the way up or on the way back to stop in my favorite little town, Bell Buckle, Tennessee. If you are ever travelling down I-24 you need to stop!

I hope to be able to announce the winner of the No Greater Joy prize on Monday, but if I cannot then it will be announced first thing Tuesday morning! Good luck to all who have and will continue to enter. Also next week I think it is time to talk about Fall fashions. I want to talk about what is "in" for this fall and also talk about how we can wear what is "in" modestly.

Have a wonderful weekend and Labor Day!

Blessings!

Feminine Friday 08.22.08

Posted in Modesty and Femininity

Please visit Miss Kelly at www.thebarefootmama.com for more Feminine Friday's and join us!

The thing about having kids is they leave stuff on.  It could be lights when they leave a room, an oven after taking out their snack, or the tv even though, thankfully, something else has caught their attention.  In this case, it is the camera.  The digital camera was left on and the battery has died.  What is this leading up to?  No picture today.  I had planned on taking a picture of my dress and end table.  Rats!  So, since you asked, I'll show you what I am doing for feminine Friday.

This picture that I found on www.lovelywhatevers.blogspot.com is a replica of a print that I have hanging on my wall!  When I left my parents home in Kentucky to go to the university in Georgia my Mom bought this for my dorm room.  Isn't it sweet?  A little girl, dressed in pink and white with little white socks and black pattened shoes.  I cannot tell you how many pictures there are of myself dressed in pink with black patten shoes!  The little girl is obviously having a tea party.  Drinking tea from a china pot in little saucers is pretty much as feminine as it comes!

How are you showing the world that you are a female?

Summer weight gain

Posted in Healthy Living

Graphic courtesy of www.allposters.com

Somehow or another instead of losing weight as I do every summer I have added the weight of the holiday's!  I swam, took water aerobics, and walked as much as possible.  The problem is the boys were home.  That's a problem because I began eating the junk food I gave them.  For instance, for lunch many days we would eat a, I can't believe I'm admitting this, Stouffer's french bread pizza with french fries and sweet tea.  We ate more than usual, and junkier than usual.  I was eating way more calories than I was dispensing.  Bryson has gained quite a bit of weight too, which isn't good.  He was always so thin, to the point of having to have him weighed every month for years, but now he has some rolls.  I am quite bummed.  I mean in 3 months the holidays are in full swing and then I'll gain more.  So, what am I going to do about it?

First of all, I have been forced to give up eating out since my van was held hostage for 4 days in the auto center and now my husband needs it to pick up saunas (he sells them through www.detoxamerica.com).  Even though I haven't noticed a weight loss I feel much healthier eating from home.  Also, without the car I am not able to go grocery shopping without my husband, who eats 90% healthy food.  Then, I pulled out my trusty books French Women Don't Get Fat and French Women for All Seasons by Mireille Guiliano.  She stresses eating well, eating smaller portions, eating slowly, and living the French life.  I'm good with most of the French life, except the whole non-monogomy thing and smoking.  As the wife of a Naturopathic Doctor, I should know that eating whole, fresh foods instead of junk, and exercise with whole food supplementation are the way to go.  I also got out Healthy Weight America by Dr. Jordan Rubin.  Basically taking the foods of Dr. Rubin combined with the ideas of Mrs. Guiliano.  I have a wedding in 10 days and I'd like to lose 5 lbs by then.  Wish me luck!

I want to leave you with a quote from Mrs. Guiliano in French Women for All Seasons:

"It's sad to imagine summer as an event to be escaped, but in more and more places it has become that.  It occurs to me that we used to make less evasive accomodations to nature, such as screened-in verandas, fans, and plenty of lemonade; in the course of an agreeably slower but still active way of life, we would tolerate a bit of sweat (not the social abomination Madison Avenue makes it seem).  I don't think it's a coincidence that the fattening of America has tracked with the spread of climate control and television.  We cannot go back to the way things were, but the goal should still be to seek out the season as one can, and not only during vacations.  Summer is the interval of peak experience, a state of being and a state of mind, and properly speaking, not a time we should be getting fat."

Our Nathaniel

Posted in Christian living

Our little boy would have been 4 years old today.  I have spoken in the past about our son Nathaniel Blake.  He was a 35 week stillborn precious angel.  I decided not to put his picture here because I don't want anyone to feel bad.  Someday maybe I will, but this is a picture of his grave.  It is a sweet plaque.  It has a teddy bear says playing in God's Garden, his birthdate, and says beloved son and brother.

There was a blood clot on Nathaniel's side of the placenta.  It turns out he had my blood clotting disorder.  All he needed was a baby asprin and he would have survived, which is the most difficult part.  Still to this day I kick myself for not forcing the doctors to take him out sooner, but there is nothing to be done now.  I just know that when my husband and I get to heaven our little boy will be there waiting for us.

I often wonder what he would be interested in right now.  When Bryson was 4 he was in the midst of Thomas the tank engine mania.  Would Nathan talk?  He looked most like me when he was born, would he still?  Would Nick pick on him as he does Bryson?  What would be his favorite foods?  I could go on and on.

Still, I'll never know, but God has his reasons.  When I first lost him I was told over and over that at least we know he is in heaven.  For so long that was the worst thing I could hear.  I didn't want Nathan in heaven.  I wanted him with me, so selfishly.  Now, I am so thankful he is in heaven and since I am a born again christian through God's forgiving grace we will be reunited at some time.

Happy Anniversary

Monet Graphic courtesy of www.doverpublications.com

On August 16th, 1963 my parents were married.  So today is their 45th wedding anniversary!  Congratulations Mom and Dad!  That's amazing!

We love you!

PS. I picked this photo because my Dad was in the Navy when they were married and then for the first 7-8 years of their marriage.  He was a Naval Coreman!  They are leaving in a few weeks for their first trip to Europe was my other reason.

Feminine Friday 08.15.08

Posted in Modesty and Femininity

Please visit my good friend Kelly at www.thebarefootmama.com for more feminine ideas

In preparing for today's Feminine Friday, I started thinking what is feminine?  What defines femininity.  So, I went to the 2nd ultimate authority (the Bible being the first, duh), Webster's 1828 dictionary.  Here is Webster's definition of feminine:

FEM'ININE, a. [L. femininus, from femina, woman. The first syllable may be and probably is from wemb or womb, by the use of f for w; the b not being radical. The last part of the word is probably from man, quasi, femman, womb-man.]

 1. Pertaining to a woman, or to women, or to females; as the female sex.

 2. soft; tender; delicate.

Her heavenly form angelic, but more soft and feminine.

 3. Effeminate; destitute of manly qualities.

 4. In grammar, denoting the gender or words which signify females, or the terminations of such words. words are said to be of the feminine gender, when they denote females, or have the terminations proper to express females in any given language. Thus in L. dominus, a lord, is masculine; but domina, is mistress, a female.

Personally, I think anything is feminine that makes me feel like a female, albeit girly or lady-like.  When I think of lady-like I think of long dresses, pearls, white gloves, and heels (ie Jackie O).  So, for my feminine Friday idea I am posting a picture of my favorite heels.  I feel so much more elegant, and busy because I like hearing the sound of the heels on the floor.  Granted I'm not chasing little ones, I put on a pair of heels at least twice a week, even around the house.  My favorite heels are from Dansko because the heel is wider, which I need for my banged up ankle.  These however, are just IMO too cute.  I got them last spring at Target.  They are the Isaac Mizrahi.  These shoes are open-toe straw 1 1/2" heel with white leather piping and bow.  BTW, the ankle crossed is my swollen yucky ankle.  My legs seriously aren't this fat usually!

I hope you are using your God-given right to be a lady every single day!

Blessings,

~Farrah

Gorgeously Green Conclusion

Posted in Healthy Living

Gorgeously Green by Sophie Uliano

I have to conclude this book today because it is due back to the library today (a major "green" thing to do).  I will give her final 5 points that you can do today for each of the remaining chapters.  I highly encourage you to get Mrs. Uliano's book and/or check out her website at www.gorgeouslygreen.com

To "green" your palace:

1.  Buy at least two compact fluorescent lightbulbs and install them.  2.  Buy at least one new houseplant (maybe an English Ivy).  3.  Take action to reduce your junk mail.  4.  Call up 1-800-CLEANUP to see which number plastics your municipality accepts.  5.  Give a eco-friendly gift for your next party.

To "green" your pantry:

1.  Make a Gorgeously Green breakfast smoothie (recipe found at www.gorgeouslygreen.com Password: Yummy).  2.  Download the "Best" and "Worst" produce lists and stick them on your fridge.  3.  Download the :Best Choices" list for your fish and stick it on your fridge.  4.  Get online and find your nearest farmer's market or have your own garden.  5.  Try three new organic foods this week..

To "green" your out and about:

1.  Check the tire pressure on your car.  2.  Carpool at least once this week.  3.  Fill your gas tank at night.  4.  Make a short call before making a long trip.  5.  Send an e-card.

To go "supergreen":

1.  Participate in a carbon-offset program (if you are planning to fly).  2.  Log onto Friends of the Earth (www.foe.org) and sign a petition.  3.  Check out the NRDC website (www.nrdc.org/greensquad) and send a friend one of their postcards.  4.  Buy a tree and dedicate it to someone you love (www.treepeople.org).  5.  Take the checklists on page 278 into your office/school.  (check out her website)

G- Green date- Take yourself on a weekly green date.  Find a way to connect with nature.

O-  Organize your day so that you will take fewer trips.  Carpool, bicycle, or take public transport.

R- Recycle absolutely everything.

G-Grab your reusable shopping tote, coffee mug, and water bottle whenever you go out.

E- Encourage all your girlfriends to become Gorgeously Green.

O-Organic whenever possible.

U-Use nontoxic cleaning and beauty products.

S-Shop online, as it saves fossil fuel.

L-Lower your energy consumption by flicking off light switches and appliances.

Y-Yoga every day

G-Generate demand for earth friendly products by voting with your dollars.

R-Reuse as many items as possible.

E-Eliminate as much was as you can.

E-Enjoy your new sense of purpose in life.

N-Nurture yourself and your planet with nothing but the best.

***I want to say that I do not agree 100% with everything in this book.  I feel the same way about this book as I did about Al Gore's nobel peace prize for his An Inconvenient Truth propaganda.  In ANY way, that is moral, you can get the word out to help be good stewards of our Earth you should.  It is important for us to take care of what God has entrusted to us.  All of these are just tips, but you do what you can.

Blessings,

~Farrah

I'm stranded with paperwork and homework

Posted in Family Life

Graphic courtesy of www.allposters.com

Our poor car.  Our poor, lovely, broken, 1996 Caravan.  It needs help.   Expensive help.  Very expensive help.  What to do?  Our van, which was given to us by our church (very providential story if you ask me) 5-6 years ago, is in the shop.  It was towed there yesterday after I was crossing a very dangerous road (Roswell Rd in Sandy Springs to those who live in ATL) at rush hour, with my 14 year old in the car, and it downshifted.  Here we were in the middle of one of the busiest roads in Atlanta and it wouldn't go.  Praying ferverently it finally went before we were hit.  I got Nick to school, came home, and had it towed to the shop.  This morning they figured out that the chirping was from the belt tensioner (sp), water is leaking from the radiator into the transmission (our 3rd) which is being warped, needs new front brakes, and the tires are pretty much balled.  Our poor van.  It has served us well.  The problem is that it has 200k miles on it and it isn't worth fixing all of that.  However, we cannot afford another new car.  My husband's car has it's own issues and it is difficult for me to drive it around (might get a ticket and the car impounded if that gives you a hint, thank you emissions test, sigh).  Thankfully the boys can ride the bus to and from school.  But, we are in quite a jam.  I'm praying, and if y'all have the time can you pray that something happens quickly.  I can't ride a bike because of my ankle!  Oh my.

Since I'm home I have been able to do lots of paperwork, and will continue today.  Tuesday I finished the first 2 quarters of tax expenses and got those to our accountant.  Wednesday I went through our bank statements and got together all of our child support we have paid his ex to the lawyer.  Today (and possibly tomorrow), I am going to organize our filing cabinet.  It is in desperate need of attention.  I despise organizing and cleaning, but as a homemaker it is certainly a priority.

We're on day 4 for the boys in school.  Bryson is loving it!  He was so cute yesterday though.  He gave me a big hug and said, Mama I missed you all day.  Ahhh!  I told him that I am totally lonely without him here with me all day, but it's only part of the day we're apart.  Boy, I hope he leaves our home by the time he's 25!  He's so attached to me, but secretly I love it (shhh, don't let my husband know! ha).  I am raising him to leave the nest, but when he's home I sure love it.  Bry has 4 teachers to prepare for changing classes in 6th grade.  In 2 of his classes he is the only boy with 3 girls!  They put all of the rowdy ones in another classroom, yay!  Bry is such a social butterfly that he doesn't care who he's with.

Nick on the other hand is really struggling with his new high school.  Being 14 years old is hard enough.  But add new humongous (1200 kids) school where you know very little people.  He was pretty much sheltered in middle school with only 13 kids per class and now there's 30-35.  Plus he has to ride the bus instead of my taking him to and from school, and he doesn't like that at all.  Yesterday he finally found a kid in our neighborhood to eat lunch with.  On top of that he has a project due already.  I told him, well, welcome to high school.  Every year the work will get more difficult, but it's preparing you for college and then the real world.  Nick is typically a emotional kid  as it is and then to put this on top he has had a really bad attitude at home and last night he got called out on it.  Life just isn't too good for him right now.  Thank God I'm through with my freshman year of high school.

I need to get busy with the paperwork.  I'm going to make some cookies for the boys for after school snacks too.  Y'all have a blessed day!

~Farrah

Gorgeously Green Part 3

Posted in Healthy Living

I apologize for my delay in posting this series.  First, I want to remind everyone why we are learning to live "green".  The MOST important reason to live "green" is that we are to be good stewards of God's earth.  Just as we are to be good stewards of God's money, we should also make sure we care for, protect, and use wisely our wonderful planet.  Next, we need to make sure that our childrens, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, etc, lives are not incredibly toxic.  I would feel horrible if my use of chemicals, water, and electricity were to harm them in any way.  Also, we should live "green" because of it's frugality.  If we drive a hybrid car we spend less on fuel (which we are running out of, its causing wars, and we are in debt up to our ears as a nation to use).  If we line dry our clothes we do not use electricity or fuel.  If we recycle, we do not have to pay so much for waste management.  And so on.

Now, for lesson number 3 let's talk about shopping!!!  It's fun, and to me a great stress reliever, but not good for our environment.  Do we really need all of this stuff?  My #1 advice about this is to not ever allow your child in front of the Disney channel or in Target/Walmart.  That's where the consumption begins.  The Dad just HAS to have his big tv/power tool/golf club.  The Mom just HAS to have a new pair of shoes to go with the new outfit or the latest electrical appliance.  Junior just HAS to have the latest video game (BIG issue in this household).  Patsy just HAS to have the newest Barbie.  Of course little baby has to have  new toys for stimulation and the latest port-a-crib.  CONSUME, CONSUME, CONSUME, why?  So what can you do.  First, put something on hold.  Think about it and if you're still in the area then go back and get it if it's absolutely necessary.  Another thing you can do is shop online.  You can order it, try it out, and then if it isn't going to change your life completely then send it back.

Remember the 3 R's of "green" living: Reuse, Reduce, Recycle

In my household, when I buy clothes I am trying to buy organic clothes, which are more expensive, but worth the expense.  Why?  1) Most are American made and I know that I am not giving money to foreign soil 2)the chemicals do not harm our skin, 3) the chemicals are not used to make the clothing pollute the earth, and 4) No sweatshops are being used in making these garments.

"For the latest eco-licious style tips and fashion trends, visit www.gorgeouslygreen.com.  Simply type the password Knockout into the search bar."  My personal favorite is www.hannaandersson.com

Of course the best way to shop for clothing and home items is through getting items in yard sales and thrift stores both economically and environmentally because nothing is having to be produced.

For grocery shopping remember to shop around the perimeter of the store only, purchase large amounts and then decant in smaller containers when you get home, use bulk food bins, choose organic, ask friends if there's anything you can get for them (as long as they live nearby), always bring reusable totes and BPA-free plastic containers for deli items.

Your 5 things to do today to help you live Gorgeously Green:

1.  Visit your local thrift store and buy at least 1 item to wear.

2.  Buy, or make, a reusable shopping tote.

3.  Buy a stainless steel water bottle and coffee cup.

4.  Buy an organic T-shirt (Whole Foods has 1 that I love on buying locally foods)

5.  Find a local eco-friendly dry/wet cleaner.

Homemade Powdered Laundry Detergent

Posted in Homemaking

www.allposters.com

Can anyone give me instructions on making powdered laundry detergent?  My husband doesn't want me to spend the time trying to make the liquid detergent, but I'd like to use something homemade.  I've heard the powdered works very well.  Any recipes, advice, links, or a visit from someone who knows would be very much appreciated!

Have a blessed day!

As a Christian wife and homemaker I think it is important to learn as much as possible on being the best we can be.  Sorry Nick (he wants to be a Marine, so, Semper Fi)!  Anyway, a few of my newest favorite sites are:  www.thepioneerwoman.com about a city gal who married her Marlboro Man.  She has beautiful photographs and yummy recipes.  I'm not sure if you know, but Mrs. Wilt has moved her blog (I used to have a link on my sidebar).  Her new blog is www.the-sparrows-nest.blogspot.com.  Over at the www.frugalgranola.com she has good Nourishing Traditions typed recipes and ideas.  Mrs. Sherman, aka Lady Lydia, from www.homeliving.blogspot.com has a new website featuring beautiful pictures that you can order or use on your blog www.lovelywhatevers.blogspot.com.  A cute blog is called www.warmpiehappyhome.blogspot.com.  I have not spent much time on that site though, but I adore the recipes, songs, and aprons.

Some of my favorites that I have shared before are:  www.pleasantviewschoolhouse.blogspot.com, www.proverbs14verse1.blogspot.com, www.intheclotheslinealley.blogspot.com (she really needs your prayers-her husband was recently deployed for a year and she just found out she has MS), www.thebarefootmama.com, www.passionatehomemaking.com, and www.keeperofthehome.org.

I do not get to check these blogs all of the time, but they are all fun.  I hope to get my next installment of Gorgeously Green up in the next day or so because I have to return it to the library next week.

Have a blessed day.

A hot day and update/prayers

Shoowee these are some hot days!  Anything that needs to be done outside I make sure to get it finished in the morning or evening.  Those afternoons are meant to be either indoors or in the pool.  Speaking of which I have a busy day ahead of me.  This morning when the sun came through the window at 7, instead of just lying there as usual, I got up and got dressed (ivy green and white LLBean halter bathing suit that actually covers and melon sundress).  Then I checked my Microsoft Outlook for my planned tasks and email.  I woke up my husband, then started his breakfast and a load of laundry.  After finishing his breakfast I started 3 loaves of banana bread.  Having the hot oven on needs to be done in the morning too!  After the bread if finished, I need to clean up the kitchen well.  I'll have Bryson help me with that.  Later, I have water aerobics and I'll see if the boys want to come.  Maybe we can hit Subway for some lunch while I'm running errands.  I have to do a return to Kohl's and use some of my Kohl's bucks to buy darlin' a new belt, his broke, it had served a long life holding up his trousers.  I need to do my CVS run and hit up Trader Joes, for groceries not money.  Return broken wii remote to Game Stop.  I'll take the boys swimming this afternoon.  Then of course it will be dinner and dishes this evening.

As for the update, the ex (Nick's Mom) has refused to sign the settlement papers over physical custody and modification of child support.  The ex will not give a reason why she will not sign except she won't.  We all know why she won't sign, including Nick, because she doesn't want to give up her child support and tax credit.  The papers state that he has 1, she has 1, darlin will still cover the insurance and we're even.  As of right now, she wants the money.  Nick will not go visit her until the papers are signed.  So he feels like his Mom is putting money above seeing him.  Nick is old enough to choose where he wants to live and has lived here for 2 years.  This is truly just a formality and fairness on the money aspect.  Nick just has to tell a judge that his Mom abused him, he wants to live here, Michaela stays with her Mom, end of story.  The ex will cost everyone thousands more dollars in legal fees because she thinks she's invincible.  It's just so sad for the kids.  I can't imagine how they feel.  Michaela thinking that even though she wants to live with her Mom that she may feel like her Dad isn't fighting for her.  Plus, she thinks her Mom deserves darlin's money because of me.  Nick knowing that his Mom only cares for money and doesn't want to see him.  Sad.

So, please pray for God's will to be done and quickly; Bryan finds the money for whatever needs to be done and has peace; I don't get too frustrated about it all being the stepmom; and that the kids don't suffer.

Blessings for you day!
