Goat Milk Soap....

Posted in Goats
Well, I am going to be making goat milk soap within the next few days. I kind of have to since I am going to be writing an article about it. I had looked online about a month ago to find an easy recipe, but I didn't really find anything. I found one site that listed several recipes, but they all looked far too complicated. So, I went to kerimae's blog seeing how she always has wisdom on this sort of thing, and found her soap post. She didn't use goat's milk for her soap so I asked her if she had one. She promptly replied and gave this one:

16 oz grated pure olive oil or castille soap

12 oz distilled water

2 oz powdered goat’s milk

1 oz cocoabutter

herbs and essential oil to preference

Ok, so my first thought was what is grated olive oil?? I use olive oil to cook with, but it was liquid, right? lol Wrong, kerimae said it is "a plain olive oil bar of soap (try the "natural soaps" section of the store or something similar) and then grate THAT (like with a cheese grater)." Well, fiddle-dee-dee, doesn't that sound dandy?

So my sister and I set to go out to the store to buy the supplies. We looked at walmart, thinking they would have what we needed (silly me), but they didn't. We spent 45minutes looking for pure olive oil. We then asked a lady if she knew where the molds were... "uh, uh, maybe back there by the gizmos?". Then we decided to look for the castille soap, but couldn't. We asked another lady.... "maybe it's by the soap?". Man, these people have no idea what is where in the store they work in.

We gave up on finding the olive oil or castille soap. We looked for cocobutter, and of course they didn't have plain cocobutter. We did find one that was almost nothing but cocobutter. Amanda and I decided to go over to Kroger to see if they had pure olive oil or castille soap, and by golly they had castille soap. They had peppermint, almond, and lavender.... and I got the almond because it had the weaker scent. As we got out to the van I started looking at the bottle of castille soap. It had a bunch of garbage on it, and something about mohammad. That soap is evil... but mom said to just pray over it and pray whatever soap I make out of it will bless someone.

Anyway I have not attempted to make the soap yet, but I am going to. It seems like it's going to be easy and fun. Hopefully I won't mess anything as I am bound to.

Goat Soap?

Posted in Goats
I looked up some goat soap recipes on Google the other day and found a site that lists different ways to make a bunch of cleaning items with goat's milk. I was wondering if anyone you have made goat-soap and/or butter. I'd like to at least try this before I call it quits! LOL

So any links would be great!

And, if you have any great homesteading posts to submit to the Homesteading Carnival, now's the time to send them in!

Escape Artists!

Posted in Goats
As many of you probably know, goats are escape artists. They just are. They can get out of just anything you don't want them to. We recently put up a fence in the barnyard, but the gates aren't finished. Right now we just have a cattle panels nailed in the entrance.

But I have three doelings who I separate from the does when I feed them. They are little piggies so I have to. Anyhow, I locked them in the barnyard the other day to feed them, and went to milk the does.

Chloe, the does who had the udder the size of Texas, was first on the milking stand. We got her udder so small I can place both my hands around it, and she has been more compliant with milking - sometimes. But today she decided that we were not getting her milk. Instead as I was just finishing up with her, she kicked the bowl of milk all over me. Note to self: I do NOT like fresh, warm milk. So, soaking wet, I went up to the house. I put the bowl inside and went back to the barn.

As I am coming down the sidewalk, I see the little doelings, who can get through the cattle panel if not secured, walking through the yard to the barn door, where they can slip in and go to the does.

Still soaking, I start for them. The barn is only 100ft away, so I figure I can slam the door before the pop their ugly little heads in. Just as I get to the walkway for the barn door, I slip and go face-flat on the ground! SPLAT! I lifted my head up, hoping no one saw me, and stand up to see what I slipped on. Well, someone left the water hose on in the walkway, which was now slippery mud! And, because I was wet from the milk all the dirt I landed on was stuck to me.

My head hurt from hitting the ground and so did my wrist. The doelings still got in and by this time I was beat! I closed them in their stall and went for the house to air out my hair, which smelled of goat, milk and sweat!

Don't worry, Dr. Spock cleared me of any broken bones. heheheee
