Doesn't The Title Fit?
Amusing Reflections Of A CountryGirl... doesn't the title fit?
Late on Wednesday night we received our first heavy snow of the season. It snowed a little bit on Thanksgiving, but melted by morning on the next day. When I woke up yesterday I could see the snow lingering on the tree branches, high above by my window. The curtain was closed but I could see through one of the sides that was not quite closed all the way. I was freezing and I wanted to stay in my warm bed. After debating on whether to sleep the whole day in bed or not, I decided that either way I had to go feed the goats. I turned off the annoying buzzing of the alarm and grabbed my barn clothes, and the proceeded downstairs. I put them on and then zipped up my jacket. As I opened the door, I felt the cool air rush in to consume to the heat. I stepped out onto the porch and put on my snow-boots. After getting the feed from the garage, I went treading through the white blanket of snow to where the sound of bleating could be heard. A rooster or two could also be heard in the background along with the neighing of two very hungry horses.
I fed the goats, and then let out the chickens and found an egg lying in front of the door. I picked it up, and then went to check on the horses. Amanda would be down soon so I didn't feed them. When I went back to the goats, I could see they were shivering as was I. It was freezing. I gave them hay and closed up their pen, hoping to keep out the winter cold. It was no use. So I went back to the house.
Later that night when dad came home, a few us went to the barn to put up boards where the air was coming in. While Dad and mom were measuring and cutting boards, I cleaned the goat stall, which had been cleaned a few days before but needed to be again before I gave them more hay. It was a long four hours in the freezing barn. I had no gloves and my fingers began to numb. My toes hurt because they were so cold, but we finished everything and I believe all the animals are quite comfortable.
Tis not always a fun and happy snowball fight in the winter land of Indiana. I am not in favour of snow, but alas, it must be. I will tread through it until the spring comes again. |
