Hi Joc
This was a really great post. I thoroughly enjoyed it. So much that I included it in The Homesteading Carnival #27: Newness Edition.
Please come by and see.
Thank you,
As Always,

did you add lye to your soap? Where did you get your olive oil bar?

Blessings,

No, I didn't use lye. And I got the bars from Krogers - they have a nice organic section.

Next you'll need to try lye soap; it's just as easy :)

And, you can cut your bars already. They will be a little soft, but they will harden up in time. Just keep flipping them every couple days or so. I kept mine on a couple layers of cheesecloth on a cookie sheet.

Good job!

Well, I don't stop by your blog that often, either. :)

Ma - she didn't have to add lye because lye and olive oil is what made the bar of soap that she bought. :)

And I agree, lye soap is just as easy. :) What you did here is very close to how I made the soap I sent you!

First, I used olive oil, lye & water to make a big slab of olive oil soap.

Then, I grated it up, melted it, and added the scents and colors that I had. :)

The nice thing about making your own is it ends up being less than a $1 a bar - because the cheapest olive oil makes the bestest soap! I like it plain because it's sooooo soft! (We use that in the shower and I use it to shave with and all the boys use it for their hair instead of shampoo.) But it was fun remelting and pouring into molds and making it pretty. I added herbal leaves to one batch and it turned the bars a weird brown color. But it was still lotsa fun! :)

One of these days I'd love to add milk to soap. Maybe I'll have to buy some from the store one of these days .... but raw milk is such a premium to get right now I don't dare use even part of it for a batch when Samuel is drinking it.

Great post, I thought the slide show was a GREAT way to show all the steps!!!!

Ashley :)
