Welcome to the 9th Homesteading Carnival. I suppose we should start doing 'theme' for each carnival but there is such a wide variety of homesteading subjects, I think it would be simply impossible.
This edition is going to be called "Do It Yourself" edition of The Homesteading Carnival. I think the term homesteader pretty much means "do it yourself" as we often find that we just do things ourselves.
In the Garden...
As always there is something good to eat at a carnival. Melissa over Down Mulberry Lane says, "Corn is ready!" Melissa's husband, alone, picked "over 300 ears of corn this morning and we have been shucking and preparing corn to freeze and can, both. Today we blanched and froze a little less than 2/3's of that. I ended up with around 20 quart sized bags." Hmmm, I would really like some fresh picked corn right now. It's nice to be able to walk right outside your yard and pick your own food, isn't it?
Gerald and Nancy of the Great Outdoors posted some beautiful pictures of their garden... "it's kind of unique in that we live on very rocky land and don't have the equipment to dig up our lot... My wife and I have been trying to find a more economical way to have a garden since we couldn't afford to go buy all the wood we'd need to make raised beds."
Eric Novak writes about his obsession with watermelon... in his post WATERMELON! "Did I ever tell you how much I love watermelon? A few days ago Dad went to the store and bought two large watermelons. We put them in the refrigerator, and as soon as they where cool, we sliced them up."
In the kitchen...
When dinner is over, you might wanna try some Homemade Peppermint Ice Cream from Our Family Journey would be a nice treat after all that work. Gloria gives the recipe so you and your family can make your own homemade ice cream, and there ain't nothin' better! Yummy!
So we've gone and grown, picked and blanched our own corn. We've made our own spaghetti sauce, instead of buying a jar from the store; and we've even managed to churn our own ice cream, and peppermint at that!
Around the house...
Outside...
Take a stroll over to the HSB Front Porch and find out about Iodine & Its Uses. Nancy Carter explains, "I was reading about how farm owners should stock up on 7% Iodine before July 31st. I think I once looked for iodine at TSC to use when our horse had thrush."
Here's another "do it yourself" job as Matthew of Cymbrogi Farm tells about Barn information. He says, "I have built this barn completely by myself. Remember I am a chef so I have no experience with building anything. I learned as I built. Nothing is true square, but mostly due to using locust poles as the poles for the main structure. We don't have any locust that grows straight." He has a lot of info over at his blog. Stop by.
How do you 'do it yourself' when it comes to hospitality? His Helpmeet of Old-Fashioned Living writes about it, "I may be given the opportunity soon to practice hospitality with someone I'd rather not invite to visit in my home, but for the sake of extended family and common courtesy - she may come anyway."
From the hearts of homesteaders...
Kitty over at Kitty's Korner explains about Unconditional Love. "God gives parents the awesome privilege of demonstrating His love to children. With support from family and friends, Mom and Dad can help their kids discover the joy and satisfaction of a personal relationship with Jesus."
Rachel of Rachel's Reasoning speaks about having a Servants Heart...A Heart Like Jesus'!
Are you a God pleaser or a People Pleaser? Amy of Home Sweet Simple Home talks about God pleaser vs. People Pleaser. "As Christians we are called to be God-pleasers and yet we do spend a lot of time trying to please people. I have a terrible habit of that. Remember this saying- You can please some of the people some of the time but you'll never be able to please all the people all of the time. I have a horrible tendency to keep trying to please anyway."
Kelcee over at Adventure of Faith expounds on the Evidence Bible questions. A really interesting post about "breaking down some of the witnessing questions ("evangelical survey" questions designed to begin a conversatioin about the Lord) that I posted a couple days ago and adding some Bible verses to support the topics."
Now, off to the home and A Tale of Two Wives. Carrie of How I Love Thee shares an intriguing story of SHIRLEY & JOHN and GLADYS & JAMES. Once you're done reading it, which couple do you think most resembles you?
To the schoolroom...
Jasmine of Ponder the Path shares about "getting back to school and getting ready to start back to school full-time. We have been doing some schoolwork throughout the summer, and actually have done quite a bit of learning, so I guess what we are really getting back to is a more structured routine. I am finding that the older I get, and the older my children get, I am really starting to like having a routine."
Jessica of Tea Flower's Corner and her mother have been putting together a magazine for quite some time. In her post, Our New Magazine, Jessica explains just what it will be featuring... "Around the Hearth is our whole grain cooking a baking section, there are going to columns for younger boys and girls, crafting and quilting, a homeschool column, and many more articles of encouragement for women."
In the last carnival, the musketman wrote about pennies and this week he'll share about Collecting Silver Coins. This would be a fun activity for kids to do. Clean some coins, write down the years, and research 'em. It could be a blast!
While we're announcing things, I wanna to publicly congratulate two mommies who just had another little bundle! KayInPA of Urban Pioneer just had a sweet baby boy! Stop over there and say congrats for yourself!
Kim of Homestead Acres also had a baby... but It's A Girl!! Children sure are a gift from the Lord.
In the barnyard...
Well, I finally got to post those hilarious goat videos you were all waiting for. If you need a good laugh, watch 'em!
Jacque at Seeking Rest on the Homestead posts about chickens and the chicken coop they recently built. No one would be able to tell... she's a first-timer at this.
And next week's carnival will be held over at Ponder The Path... send your submissions in and please post about the carnival!
