Mumps

"Never doubt in the dark what God has shown you in the light". -Michelle Terrill

So Iowa is dealing with a Mumps out-break...Hmm.

Most of the out-breaks have occurred among vaccinated college students.

I can't seem to find a death among them, and no high risk for death from Mumps in general. Why in the world are we vaccinating for Mumps????

I have 5 kids who are vaccinated and two that aren't.

The more I read and think about it the less sense it (to me) make to vaccinate.

I don't buy in to  anecdotal evidence either pro or con.

All the statistics, scienctific data and commen sense, put together with my world-view just doesn't add up to the idea that most vaccinating is wise, and that it (always) far outways its cons.

I didn't start out this way...its been kind of a journey for me...

How about you?

Jenette.

Sorry if I seem flippant.

This is a source of discussion in my house.... I have always been pro-vaccination, my dh anti. I have, for now, conceeded not to vaccinate. I think there are some diseases that I would like vac-ed against: polio, measels, smallpox (if it became necessary again!), mumps for boys, rubella for girls (I understand these are not necessarily death-causeing, but can be infertility-causing...) Not against chicken pox (good heavens!) or pneumococcal (sp?) - these aren't that bad if you are smart. Now I just need to find some children with chicken pox.... lol

Well, I was young and dumb and didnt know all the side effects of vaccines, and wish I had not done most of them.

I had my son get the chicken pox one and within two weeks he had shingles instead. Great help that was!

Vaccines

We have not gotten the MMR vaccines for any of our kids, but we have gotten most of the others (not the new ones - chicken pox, flu, etc.). However, we don't go by the "schedule". One vaccine per year has been our schedule.

When our older son was a baby the dr. recommended we get three vaccinations at the same time. Ever since then he has gotten these unusual high fevers when he gets sick (103-105 degrees). I think it's because of the vaccines. Not proveable, I know. Just "mother's intuition". But we do research on each one before we get it, and as time goes on we are less and less "pro-vaccination".

Blessings!

Hah, I am still young and stupid, even though I am 37. Notice, I vaccinated 5 of my kids...I am a slow learner.

Yes, Polio and Tetanus seem more problematic and scary than say chicken pox. I have to say, putting a disease inside your body still seems contrary to nature and the way that God made us. I don't know all of this stuff difinitevely, but then, only God does. We have to do our best with what we know (and have the freedom to decide for our families :). That's one thing I like about the people I have met here... no bully's :) Very respectful people you are.

My kids both had DTP I think, anyway, the one that includes whooping cough. They were both born at a freestanding birthcenter, but when my son was born, the hospital that we would have transferred to if we necessary was in the midst of a whooping cough outbreak, so that one hit kind of close to home. The pediatrician managed to talk me into one or two others for my son, but we have put our foot down, and they have not gotten any more vaccinations, other than DTP follow-ups, and even those are probably behind schedule. I just hate the idea of putting toxins into their little tiny bodies. The one that drove me the most crazy is the Heppatitis B vaccine. You're only at risk for Hep B with AIDS-type behaviors, or if the baby's mother has (or might), and the doctors are still constantly pushing this vaccine on newborns, so you don't have to worry about it later on. It drives me crazy!!

of our 8 children, only 2 have had their immunizations...the eldest had all of them through grade school, the second one had hers through her first year only. We have not done any on the others, and won't do them on the newest arrival in a few weeks.
That said, we do review the 'latest' information as it comes out, and I've seen nothing that has even prom[pted me to change my mind yet. That's not to say maybe someday...but so far, I'm very comfortable with my choice. My DH is fully behind this as well, although he is not as interested in the researching himself -- he simply trusts that I am looking into it completely and have gathered the facts needed when I present things to him.

Vaccinations

Posted by gavinj77 on 2006-May-31 at 02:15 - Link

A GREAT resource for anyone looking at vaccinations is "Vaccinations A Thoughtful Parents Guide" By Aviva Jill Romm. It gives some great insight onto the history of vaccines, illnesses and how to treat each specific illness should you or your unvaccinated children get sick. I feel such a responsibity to educate myself so I can do the best for my children. Be it vaccinating or not.

It's an emotional subject and sometimes can be frustrating when you see a better way than the norm.

Thanks for the information. You are right. I think we do need to take the effort to make an educated decision and read enought (pro and con) to not get taken by the hype of either side :).

About Me

A non-green thumb who loves plants, and wants to know "why" about everything, likes to eat what is fresh, and is so amazed at the world God has made, and sometimes not so impressed by the things man can make, who wants to learn how to be a good care-taker of all that God has blessed us with, and be thankful and generous with it. Oh yeah, and I homeschool :)
