Friday, February 8, 2008Hello agianPosted in Homestead Happenin'sHi there Well after two days of being with my new sister-in-law I am glad to be home. Not that it was all that bad but it is nice to sleep in a bed agian : ) We had some adventures in cooking and baking over those two days! We made home made breaded and baked chicken strips, and none of it came in a box either : ) No, no, we wanted to do it our selves so we bought a package of chicken and as soon as we got it home we stuck it in the freezer and forgot to leave some out for dinner. So we thawed it in the micro-wave, which took about five minutes more than expected ( she and I arent very good guesstamaters ). We put it on to defrost 1/4 pound and let it do its thing but it just defrosted the skin so back in it went on the setting for a half pound and that thawed it a little better so we set it on for another half pound setting and let it do its thing agian, and this time it worked ! So we went to work and she was being a little dangerous with the knife so I was to cut the chicken into strips, that was when I realized that we had thawed legs instead of breasts. Well I thought " There both chicken it should work the same" thats what I "thought". In reality there is a difference, there is a big difference ! So I started hacking away at the thighs and thought I would work my way to the ankles. Well it doesnt quite work that way and ( just because I am picky I made sure there was no fat on any pieces ). As Kristina was getting the crackers crushed for the breading and the eggs cracked and the flour poured, she turned around for the first strip of chicken while I was cutting the meat she looked at me like I was from another planet, held up the pittiful strip and said "What is this?" I turned around to look at her and found that she was holding up a piece of chicken that wasnt even a square inch! So we cooked them any way and they were actualy very good but I think we will use breasts next time. Now for the baking experience. We had decided that we wanted brownies the first night so we got out a box mix and we made it and it was all ready to go into the oven when Kristina wanted to put walnuts on the top, well that was fine with me but. Matt doesnt like nuts on his brownies so out came another boxand we made that one without nuts and we set them in the oven. We kept checkin them and the only thing happening was there was a dry film on the top, but the inside was still batter. We had to go down to Matts work to give him his dinner so we didnt think it would be a problem so we went. When we came back nearly a half hour later we checked the brownies but they didnt seem much better. Then it finaly occured to us that we had put them in 8x8 pans. So we set them back in the oven and waited, and waited, and waited. And having watched nearly an entire movie we checked on them one more time and they were FINALY done. After about an hour or more of baking them. Well that was my little adventure, glad I could share it. Well Id best be off. Thanks for reading.
