Spring planting
A few weeks ago I started our little seedlings for our garden this year. In trying to use what we have, I started with seeds I had left over from last year (they'd been in the freezer all winter) so I'm hoping that they'll grow this year.
I planted the following:
- About 15-20 Roma tomatoes
- 4-5 beefsteak tomatoes
- 9 okra plants
- 20 cucumbers
- 5-7 each of jalapeno, serrano and cayenne peppers
- watermelon
- Lettuce
- Chives
I'm sure I planted others but I honestly can't remember what. I used styrofoam cups that I've had for about a year and just filled them up with potting soil, labeled the cup and set them in a huge water trough we used for potatoes last year. They're all sitting in there with a layering of white trash bags over the top to act as a mini greenhouse. It doesn't look all that wonderful, a little unsightly, but I didn't have to buy a thing other than the potting soil. So, we'll see what happens.
A lot of the cucumbers are sprouting as are some of the roma tomatoes. Even a few of the okra have sprouted. The bad thing is that I think it got a little cold one night because my cucumbers are wilting now. I hope they make it. If not, I'll just plant more seeds.
I've included some pictures of our little greenhouse. When we plant the garden I'm also going to start about 30 green bean plants as well as some additional cucumbers, lettuce, basil, corn and whatever else I can find.

We typically don't officially plant the garden until after Easter. However, Easter is in late March this year so I might wait a little longer just in case there's another cold snap.
I think we're going to try to make a huge garden this year with Johnny's parents, who live down the hill from us. I'd like to do tons of corn, potatoes, etc. so that we can feed our families this year without spending a lot at the grocery store.
We'll see what happens ... the garden continues to grow!
