Humble Beginnings

Cold Front and Pitiful Driveway

Sorry I haven't written lately...life has taken over!

Our driveway is a half-mile long, coliche (spelled right?) road.  It's rocky, pitted, and an absolute pain to drive on.  The family joke is if we nuked it, it would be an improvement.

Well, with all the rain we've had, the water table is so high that a spring has sprung towards the part of the driveway that's up by the highway.  Last Friday morning I could straddle the spring.  By Friday afternoon I couldn't straddle it and my tire dropped about 8" into the muck.  I made it through, though.  So, throughout the weekend hubby and his brother were throwing huge boulders/rocks into the muck and they were sinking ... and disappearing.  We have a sinkhole or quicksand...take your pick.  The really bad part is that the sinkhole spread across the entire driveway and there are ditches on both sides of the driveway so you can't drive around it.

Well, Sunday night the power went out.  Monday morning I head out for work (around 6:15) and the sweet spot that was there on the left side that if you hit just right, you could make it through, was GONE!  I tried 5 times to go through and on the fifth attempt I got stuck.  So, I walked home a half-mile (in the dark) with a little tiny flashlight that shines about 2 feet out, just enough to see your feet.  Did I mention the mountain lion that's roaming the area right now - it's attacking and killing our neighbor's goats just down the road from us.  Or the wild dogs that seem to come out of nowhere?  Needless to say I prayed all the way home!  I later found out that the power company had come through the sweet spot and knocked it out completely.

Anyway, I woke up hubby and he attempted several times to get the truck out and couldn't.  I think we finally got it out a few hours later.  By that time the left side of the truck had sunk into the muck about a foot.

I think we spent between 5-6 hours getting the truck out and adding 4-6 truckloads of rocks into the sinkhole.  Then, hubby put two thick sheets of plywood over that so that we can drive across it.  It didn't matter though.  I got stuck later the same day.  The plywood sheets slipped out and I slipped into the ditch on the right side this time.  Lovely.

Anyway, the dear neighbor next door has offered for us to drive through his property (he has a gate that's on our driveway) until it dries up.  Yeah!  I think I'm the only one using it though.  My in-laws and hubby all take our driveway and don't get stuck..  I'm paranoid.  Being stuck twice in one day is too much for me.  We're expecting rain again this weekend so I don't even want to think about what the sinkhole is going to do.  Right now, it's slightly drying up (the spring isn't running now but it's still real wet).

As for the cold front, we always get one around Easter and it's coming again.  We've had beautiful, warm weather for the past few weeks.  So, I've been getting anxious about planting the remainder of my little plants outside.  But alas, I'm glad I didn't.  Our 70° and 80° weather is about to turn to 30s at night, 50s during the day and rainy.  I'm glad I waited.  I'm going to get a bale of hay today for the few plants that are already in the ground and in my larger pots that I can't bring in.  The potatoes should be fine, though.  They are doing really well in their boxes.  I'm quite surprised and happy.  People at the office think I'm nuts, but hey, it works.

I hope y'all have a splendid Easter!  Enjoy the true meaning of Easter.  Jesus died on the cross and rose to heaven for you and me.  Your sins are forgiven and He loves you!!

The driveway thing would drive me crazy. I believe I would just stay home. I hope you get it fixed soon. As for the temps, it came this way too. We were having highs of 87 and lastnight it got down to 30. I knew it would happen but now I am freezing.
Blessings,
Trixi
