Homestead Challenge - Day #3
Scavenge lumber.
Last summer a new neighborhood was being built down the street from us. My husband asked the foreman / developer if he could gather the lumber that they weren't going to use. The foreman said that if it had nails in it, he could have it.
Well, Johnny collected lumber every day for about 3 months. We gathered mostly 2x6s and some 2x4s. The lumber was in exceptional condition w/ the exception of the few nails in the boards. We pulled the nails and I've set about straightening those nails in the hopes that we can use them on other projects.
We gathered enough lumber to add a covered porch on our cabin (about 8' wide and 16' long) and to build an 8' x 8' shed (thus getting our excess stuff out of storage saving us $$ every month).
We still have enough lumber to build a small cabin. So, if you have any new communities coming into your area, you might try this approach if you need lumber for sheds, barns, etc.
