Bartering

{ 07:16, May 26, 2006 } { 4 comments } { Link }

Bartering is a good thing, saves money.  In return for the use of her buck goat to get Miss Jar Jar pregnant, my friend Lara gets this in return.

Call it a scarf, call it a table runner, call it payment for services rendered.

I knit this from my handspun Colonial Top roving in purple with a bit of blue and pink in it.  The roving was spun into a lace weight yarn.  Scarf was knit on size 7 needles and was completed in three days. It used about 300 yards of yarn to complete. Finished size was 15" across by 45 1/2" long.

Any of you folks that sell your products online or otherwise, do you think this would sell well?  I am thinking of making a few more and trying to sell them.  What is your professional opinion?

Gotta run!  Bye Bye!

(I think they do still sell Ivy Dry, but it doesn't seem to help me.. :D Thanks for the post btw.)
First of all, this absolutely beautiful shawl/scarf/payment would definitely sell!! Second, don't tell anybody else how quick you made it!! I'm just beginning to learn about hand-crafted marketing, spinning, etc. If you are able to contact the right market (at Hand Crafted Only fairs, etc.) you will get an unbelievable price for this beautiful thing! Not sure who you should contact to find out - but the first place I'd look is on the internet for spinning knitting guilds and see what they are charging. ?? Might work.

I belong to a spinning guild and I was thinking of putting some of them into the guild craft show later in the summer.

Well, now as for the pattern. Its my own, and i'm not sure I want to share it! LOL!

Selling

Well, first of all it didn't take you just the knitting time, you know ... spinning, as well. To sell, I am sure that people will tell you to take the cost of the material and add to it for selling or take the hours and give yourself a decent hourly wage.

However, you need to find the right market. Now, that scarf you made SHOULD sell for at least $100 in the right market ... it is so lovely and delicate. Whatever you do, do NOT sell at Walmart prices! So many have Walmart mentality (you know the kind - "I can buy one like this for $5.00)...

I hope you can find the market and make more of these .... you should be proud of yourself!
