New Addition to the Homestead

One of the ideas of our homesteading is to be as self sufficient as we possibly can in today's world.  One of the dreams towards this goal is starting to become a reality today.

Today is the day that Joy, the Nubian dairy goat comes to live with us!

These were taken yesterday when we went to look at her at her current residence.  Their fence came down in places and they need to find her a new home since she kept getting into the neighbor's yard.  The neighbor's wern't pleased.

She is a 3-4 year old Nubian, and has never been bred.  She is super sweet and was really good with my kids, wanting to play with them.  Her health looks very good, no nasty discharges, hooves look nice and clean, no tender areas on her body or her udder, and a good looking coat.  So we decided she needed to come live with us.

We pick her up at 9:30 this morning.

Our plan is to get her bred quickly, and one of my friends has a Nubian buck that we will be introducing her to.  Hopefully we will have kid/kids by mid October!  That is, pending her going into heat after meeting her new boyfriend.

We are all so excited about having Joy come to live with us!  Self sufficiency CAN be a reality!

So will you be able to get milk from her and spin anything from her (hair?)? Do I sound ignorant?
