Homestead Journal at Fat Turkey Farm

Unexpected Visitor

Yesterday afternoon, my daughter went outside on the patio and immediately started yelling "snake, I saw a snake tail"  So out I go to see what all the fuss is about and sure enough, there goes a snake's tail slithering thru the grass alongside the house.  It had no rattle, so I wasn't overly worried about it.  The kids and I rounded up the birds that were loose and got them back into the coop yard  then went in search of the said snake.  The chopping hoe was brought out, just in case.  I called Mike at work and described what the snake looked like to him.  He said it was a bull snake, also known as a gopher snake.

This snake was about 2 1/2 foot long and about 3 inches around at his fattest part.  All brown and yellow with some stripes on him.  Mr. Snake decided he didn't like us looking at him much and he started to head towards the chicken coop.  I didn't want the girls to beat him up so we hooked him with the hoe to move him down into the field.  He didn't like that much and kept sliding off.  He finally ended up in the flowers around the pine tree where I got this pic of him.

He has since slithered away, guess he didn't like us much.

I got some spinning done with the Jacob.  It is a dream to spin!  So light and airy, only thing wrong is that I have to stop and pick out the last of the goobers that just wouldn't let go.  It keeps a pretty fuzzy halo around it which will fluff up nicely after I ply it and wash it.

It really goes from a darker grey to a lighter grey depending on the rolag.  Each one is slightly different from the others, and it makes a pretty yarn.  It should look great after plying.

Time to make the donuts!  Bye Bye!

Ooh, and to think that some people are totally freaked out by EARTHWORMS! I would probably have to leave home if I saw a snake like that in my garden (yes I would!)
