My heart on sewing

I have been praying about some changes here for our sewing business.  We have really only been a word of mouth business for the past years.  That has suited us just fine, but I keep thinking that maybe we could help others more if we sort of put ourselves 'out there' a bit more.  Still, with a large family, the sewing is about 3rd or 4th on the list of any importance.

One thing that has been on my heart lately is my pricing.  I hate charging people (goodness, I sound like my husband now!  LOL  He keeps talking himself out of starting his business on his own because he hates to price items!).  I know there are ladies out there offering the same things we are...some are higher priced, some are lower.  Each that I know of from my own personal experience offers wonderful, Godly service and wonderful workmanship.  So why would you buy from one as opposed to another?  Well, maybe recommendations, maybe a better Google location, etc.  I know there are many ladies who simply cannot sew much on their own, or maybe they aren't feeling as proficient in their skills yet.  Many are trying to follow what they find to be a strong calling, a conviction, in their life toward modest dressing and headcovering, yet they aren't able to find anything suitable in their stores locally, or things affordable to them within the restrictions of their budgets.

We have 9 children.  We have a 20 acre homestead that we are basically new to and need to work at continually to bring it up to what it is capable of offering us and The Lord.  We homeschool, with 5 children, sort of 6, in "formal lessons" this year.  We also have a burden to sew when we can for others seeking more conservative clothing and modesty in their lives.  We are striving to move into a more deep stewardship here...that means making our homestead more self-sufficient and God-reliant, such as raising the livestock needed to feed our family and supply other food needs, such as milk and eggs; it means tending to a large garden and working toward a harvest that will sustain our family from season to season; it also means guiding our children in their Walk with The Lord and growing their knowledge and understanding of why we do what we do.  These all take time, and sewing -- sewing is on that list as a true burden of our hearts as well.  Some days we struggle to fit all the important things in, same as any family

Over the next week or so, I will be working on some changes here to the sewing blog, some of which will include re-working some pricing.  We want to do what we can to make conservative, modest dressing affordable to everyone.  I appreciate the wonderful emails we have received already, and for the customers we have had this past year, thank you all so much.  You have each played a part in growing our burden even deeper.

Blessings in The Lord,
Mrs Dewey Smith

I still need to add some drawings and photos, but the categories are open and ready for orders.
We will still be making some tweaking here and there, but please feel free to browse around and ask any questions!

An Update

Well, still no pictures to upload, but we have been fine-tuning some clothing around here to share soon.
Even without photos of our own stitching, you can check out several areas of modest dress online and get a feel for what we offer here.  We have Prairie sets for girls and ladies alike, sharing a yoked, un-waisted dress and a pinafore style apron, or you may add a waistband to the adult version.  We offer Prairie-style bonnets, as well.
Our dresses are traditional cape style, offering modesty to both girls and ladies.  We also offer plain jumpers, and perhaps a basic skirt will come around later.
We offer headcoverings in both a Charity style hanging veil, as well as a soft kapp style.
For the boys, we offer only vests currently, but are working on plain shirts to share later on.

There are many things that we can do to help each other in our modest walk, and it is my prayer that we will all work together to share our testimonies of modesty with one another, to help encourage and lighten our paths.

Welcome to Our Sewing Room!

Being a mother of many children, and conservative in dress style, it only made sense to me to sew for my family.  Looking at the available clothing options in the stores at large, it was a given that I would need to sew at home.

I began several years ago adding a few friends to that circle of sewing, and from there it has grown to make a small cottage business for my family.  There aren't a great many orders detracting me from my first true calling of being an helpmeet, mother and keeper at home here on our homestead, but to be able to offer my services to others searching out modesty in their own dress...this has truly been a blessing.

Having shared about our family, our Walk with the Lord, and now my sewing business on our family blog site, Abundant Blessings Homestead, we discovered a bit more was needed aside from a simple listing of what we offer and some prices.  We needed photos, or at least simple drawings to give those visiting some idea of what our creations look like.  That is where this new site came into play.  I am not at all computer-saavy...nor do I really have time to gain that knowledge...so I am making a basic site, with the help of dear friends here at HomesteadBlogger, to share what we have.

I will be happy to sew for you as God continues to bless me with the privilege to do so.  It has truly touched my heart to be able to offer this gift the Lord has shared with me in order to help other families move to modesty in their own lives,  and as they teach deep Godliness to their children.

Let us live for Him who died for us.

May the Lord bless and keep you this day and always,

Mrs Dewey Smith

A New Blog!

Posted on Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 09:37

I am still tweaking and working out the kinks here, but I hope to have this up and running soon!

I do hope everyone will continue to check back and see what I've listed and shared.

And don't forget, I am still blogging about home and family over at Abundant Blessings Homestead

Blessings to all,

Deanna
