Busy gardening, sewing and hot weather

Posted in Just Thoughts

I haven't had time to post here for a little while.  I've been very busy trying to catch up with the gardens.  We went from very cool and wet weather (yes even needing to use the wood stove!)  to extreme hot and dry weather.  Dh set up the AC a few days ago and that helped a LOT.  I have a hard time breathing when the weather gets into the 30's C and humid.  During the day we've been just trying to keep cool.  Come evening I've been working non stop in the gardens.  I'm not sure what's worse, gardening during the hot day or the bugs in the evening! LOL
The weeds had really gotten away from us during the rainy spell.  Now I have almost all the beds cleared out.  I just need to finish around the cabbages and some tomatoes.  I will need to finish it up tomorrow as it looks like we are in for another week of rain.

We had a cold front come through yesterday.  It didn't make it any cooler then, although today is lovely!  But we did get some nasty storms up this way.  The worst of it just skirted around us, we received mostly rain and some thunder.  But others had large hail and there were a few tornadoes.

This morning I went to the annual library book sale in a nearby town.  It's pretty big and goes by donation.  I look forward to it every year!  There didn't seem to be as many books as last year and it was VERY crowded, but I still found some great deals.  I'll share more about my finds tomorrow, but I picked up 30 videos on different topics from animals, science and drama.  Lots of books on history and countries around the world.  Perfect for our unit studies this year!

I've been busy sewing an knitting to.  My dd3 is working hard at potty training (yahoo!)  so I'm sewing trainers for her.  DD1 started reacting a while back to the liners in her pocket diapers.  They have a suede cloth liner that she doesn't do well with.  So I'm switching her over to fitted and wool/fleece covers.  Then little ds is an odd size lol so doesn't fit into many that I already have.  He has a wide waist and long rise.  Soooo yup I'm sewing up a new stash for him to!
I also have a big stack of skirts I've cut out and need to sew.

Thank you HSB, Gardens and Farms...

Posted in Just Thoughts

I haven't been online very much lately.  So busy in the gardens!  First I'd like to thank HSB for picking me as blogger of the week!!

I feel like I have 101 things up in the air right now...I'm in the middle of a huge spring cleaning and decluttering.  We are also doing a lot of work out side.  Today I planted our sweet corn.  We have also almost finished planting our white potatoes.  We have 3 rows left to finish tomorrow.
I will try and do some photos/vid of our gardens soon.  So far our onions, garlic and radishes are doing very well.  A few of the peas are up to.

Its been quite cool her the last few days, at night even below 0c!  But today we were back to the heat.  I hope the cool weather is over for a while.  Normally this time of year it says around 10C at night.  Its been cold enough we need to run a small heater in the greenhouse at night.  I really don't want our plants to freeze!  Hopefully latter this week I'll be planting out the cabbage, broccoli and celery.

Things didn't work out with the last property we looked at...But we have an offer in on another farm, 50 acres.  It needs a lot of work, basically the same thing we just did to this place.  LOL  Good thing we have practice at fixing up older home eh? heehee.  Don't know if it will work out or not but we'll see.

Book Review ~ The Noticer

Posted in Just Thoughts

I recently finished reading The Noticer by Andy Andrews.  I really enjoyed reading this book!  The basic story is about a young man left orphaned and living on the street.  The story is set in a small gulf coast town,  into his life comes a man named Jones.  Jones helps people to understand things in a new light.  A  clear perspective he calls it.  It is so true when we have problems in our lives, we often can't see the real truth behind it.  Why we keep falling into the same traps etc.  Jones is an interesting elderly man that everyone seems to know.  He doesn't stay long in one place but seems to show up when people need a friend the most.  I have to say it was refreshing to read a story where someone really cares enough to help build people up.  It is so easy to turn your back or use uncaring words when people need help.  Some of the ideas shared in this story are love and making marriages work, integrity and reputations, hope and friendship.
This book is definitely worth reading.  Also included is a reading guide for group discussions.
This story is based on the authors own life.

Been Sick

Posted in Just Thoughts

It's been a long week!  Most of it I've felt like I was hit by a train.  Yup I finally got hit with nasty old mastitis.  I've been very lucky over the last few years and always avoided it!  But it hit me hard earlier this week.  I've pretty much been on bed rest since Monday.  Finally this afternoon I'm starting to feel normal again.
I have just been pushing myself to hard I guess.  I often get bouts of insomnia, so between not being able to sleep and up and down with little ones I'm averaging 4 hours a night.  Then on top of that I've been doing more work the last few weeks then normal.  I was just to much...
So like it or not I'll have to pace myself slower!  I'm tired of resting already.  Sick enough to need to rest and well enough to be bord like crazy.  LOL
Anyway I hope to be around more soon when I'm feeling better.

Review ~ DVD Bible

Posted in Just Thoughts

With five young children, we have searched for quality Bible programs. Unfortunately many of the DVD's we've found have very foolish acting characters.

I was so happy to find Read And Share DVD Bible! The music is a soft and similar in style to classical. The voices of the characters are not high pitched and whiny but pleasant, the narrators also. This is a big plus to parents! As I find the high pitched voices often used in cartoons irritating. The characters aren't overly cartoony, real enough looking to be believable. The colors are also soft and pleasant.

There are 13 stories on Volume 1 and it's a nice mix of old testament and new. Including favorites such as creation, the flood and the birth of Jesus. Each story is about 3 minutes in length. Our children have really enjoyed watching this and also REMEMBER the stories very well. I thought at first that my oldest (6 years) wouldn't like it, for it's simplicity. But I was wrong on that! She likes it as much as her younger siblings. I have found them play acting out the stories, learning and having so much fun.

I look forward to more DVD's in this series and would recommend them to anyone!

Wise Guy Seminars!

Posted in Just Thoughts

Fathers today are in more need than ever to learn skills that will better serve their families. Homeschool dad, John Powers will be starting the first Wise Guy seminar in April 2009. These are live, inexpensive online seminars to encourage men to take the challenge of "doing it yourself."
The Wise Guy seminars are where dads can come and get encouragement and how to's from John Powers.  John will have "Auto-Talks" in each seminar. John has seen a decline in new car purchases and an increase in people coming to get car repair done.  This can only mean that the ecomony is dictating it's time to keep those cars until they drop dead.   He has worked as a master technician for Honda the last 23 years.  He's knows the in's and out's of not only the auto-repair industry, but also what it takes to do basic repair at home.  This is a wonderful chance to teach your sons, ask questions, and learn and save money.
John’s hobby is woodworking. He enjoys making father/son projects for his family’s magazine Seasons at Home, and encourages dads to get busy and give it a try!  He will walk through previously published projects such as the "Make a Kitchen Pantry" (summer 08),  "Make a Push Car!" (spring 08), "Make a Writing Desk" (spring 09) and more.  These seminars are for sons as well.  The push car project is perfect to teach your children how an axle works!  Homeschooling fun!

Some Good News

Posted in Just Thoughts

Well I have some happy news to share.  The refinance on our house went through today!   So we have the money set aside to start looking for a larger farm.  We have one that we have been working on although the owner changed his mind...We'll have to wait and see if that works out, we really did like it!  In the mean time we are still looking at other places and hoping to find just the right one in our budget.
We had so many hiccups between our broker and lawyer we were almost sure something would happen at the last minute.  But thankfully everything went through just fine.  Now it's time to relax a little and start looking around.

Been Busy, trying to get a homestead

Posted in Just Thoughts

I'm still here, just have been very busy lately!  We've had snow storm after snow storm in the past week.  I hear we are to get more this week coming also.
One of the many things we've been working on is getting a larger homestead.  We are in the process of refinancing our house to buy another larger homestead.  So we have been doing a lot of running around for that.  Dh needs more room to expand our rabbit business and we would love to have our own animals again.  We've been working so long, since before we met each other, for this.  We have a verbal offer in on a place right now.  BUT the owner has gone from being very flexible on the price to not wanting to budge.  The real-estate agent is not very happy with him!  But we're still working on it and if that place doesn't work out then we will just hold on until we have another we like.  There is one we looked at last fall and really like but it needs a lot more work.  Not something we mind, we are up to the challenge!
I do hope that we'll find out soon what is going on.  We have gardens to plan and plant.  It would be nice to know WERE we are doing that lol.  I don't want to start seeds here if we will be moving that far a way.

We are still working on renovations to.  Dh should be done most of the drywall sanding this week then we can get the sun porch and hallway painted.  Then get the new floors in.
