Blogger Friend School Assignment 101

Posted in Blogger Friend School

Memory Verse:  Psalms 55:22 - Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and He shall sustain thee; He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.

Assignment: This would be a good week to tell about your worst struggles with a lifestyle of homeschooling.  Tell about something you’ve struggled with and how God’s mercies gave us the strength to get past it.  Also, share any curriculum/homeschool methods that have been a relief to you, i.e., a particular Teacher’s Manual or Homeschooling method that’s been easier for your family.  Talk about how you felt when the burden was lifted and Oh, What a Relief it is!

Hmm...If I really stop and think about it my worst struggles aren't major problems.   My biggest challenges are homeschooling with toddlers and wee babies in the mix.  Also getting rid of the pressure to get it "all" done.  I've learned to work around the littlest nap schedules for the more one on one topics like math.  After coming close to a burn out for both the little ones and myself I realized that I needed to cut back.  I've always said I felt the biggest problem in homeschooling is the HUGE wealth of good books and topics to cover!  But when you try to do to much at once, even if its fun, you burn out.

Last year I was trying to do FIAR every day, math, phonics, reading, grammar, copy work and then have world history (SOTW)  3 days a week and science 2 days a week.  It was just to much with pregnancy/new baby, and two toddlers and major renovations LOL.  This year we have relaxed and although we have added MORE topics to cover we are having fun doing it a simpler way.

First I'm using FIAR as our main curriculum.   Putting the focus back on this allows us to truly enjoy the program.  We also do math, and language arts everyday.  Then we do ONE extra.  So one day a week for each wold history, Canadian social studies, nature study, science, artist/composer study.

I find this works sooo much better for us!  And of course we do lots of reading together and cover many "extras" that way also.

Blogger Friend School Assignment 100

Posted in Blogger Friend School

Assignment: Take time this week to write about YOU and your feelings of trials and triumphs with homeschooling.  Touch on when you first heard about the concept of home schooling and whether you tip-toed into the idea or just jumped in and never looked back.  Share your schooling as a child and how you compare it to what your goals are for your children.

I was a public school child.  I loved to learn and always had my noise in a book.  However it did not take me long to figure out the kids that like learning are on the "outs" in school.  The teachers might like you but know one else does.   Being in a room of 30 other children that mock and pick on you all day does nothing to encourage a good learning environment!

There was a homeschooling family on our street and I always envied them.  They got to really learn things and we not stuck at a desk all day.  I remember being so surprised at some of the topics they learned about, that we later didn't touch on until high school!

When I was in my  mid teens I removed myself from school and finished with a mixture of homeschooling and correspondence.  I LOVED it!  Once again I could actually LEARN.

I always knew that if I had children I would homeschool them.  My husband also had very little he liked about his public education and was all for my choice in this.

My goals for our children are to love the Lord with all their harts, develop a true love of learning and good work habits and not to be afraid to be themselves.

Our assignment: I thought this week we could write something fun or just take a look back at our lives and what we wanted to do when we were so young!   It'll be fun to read about what everyone thought they would be doing when they were young...did you ever think you'd be homeschooling?

When I was a little girl I always wanted to work with animals.  I dreamed of living on a farm, being a vet and breeding Arabian horses and Germain Sheppard's.

I changed my mind on the vet idea when I was in my late teens.  I simply didn't have the money for university.  I'm sure glad I did or I would never have met my wonderful husband!!  We both love the farm/homestead life.  We've lived on big farms, in apartments and on a big lot like we are now.  Still working to get back to a large land base.  I don't breed horses or dogs.  Maybe someday  but I do breed one of my favorite breed of cats, Manx!  And we also farm rabbits.

When I was little I never wanted to get married or have children.  So no I didn't think I would be homeschooling!  But thankfully my life changed on that!  But I did know that IF I had children I absolutely would homeschool.  Thankfully dh and I have always agreed on that.

Part A: Share at least 3 “Bountiful Blessings” that the Lord has abundantly provided.

Oh goodness were to start.    I'm so very thankful for my wonderful husband.  My great kids and how we all stick together through thick and thin.

Part B: Share your Thanksgiving Feast {past or present} You may use Photos, menus, recipes, activities, traditions…Be creative! –”Who carves the turky?”, “Do you save the wishbone?”, “What do you serve for dessert?”, “Who hosts the Thanksgiving dinner in your family” ….my favorite…”What do you do with all those leftovers?”

As a Canadian out Thanksgiving was in October.  But I thought I'd share anyway.

We have been blessed to be able to host Thanksgiving for our friends for the last 3 years.   Most years I make the following:

  • Turkey
  • Gravy
  • Dressing
  • Whipped Potatoes
  • Cold Slaw
  • Sweet Potato Casserole
  • Rolls
  • Pumpkin Pie
  • Cherry Pie
  • Cranberry Sauce
  • And often friends bring apple pies and other goodies.

We don't normally have many left overs!  But I normally make up a turkey soup from the turkey bones and extra bits of meat.

We never know what the weather will be like.  This past Thanksgiving we had a heat wave and needed the AC on to cook the turkey!  LOL

Ok I'm way behind in my assignments!  Trying to get caught up a little.

Part A - Share about your family’s laundry. Where is it kept? Who does it? How does your family sort it? Do you wash by hand? Hang clothes on the clothesline? Make your own laundry soap? How often do you do laundry? How many loads each day/week? Indoor laundry room, in the garage, or laundry mat? Even more fun…share a picture!

Each room has a laundry basket were all laundry must be put.  The kids are getting pretty good at remembering to not just toss it on the floor.

With our family of 6 I do at least 2 loads a day to keep caught up.  If I do get behind from being sick or a way then it takes a day or two of non stop laundry to get all caught up again.  Last year when our washer died dh blessed me with a front loader washer!  I just love it so much.  It cleans the close so much better and uses a lot less water, soap and hydro.

In the summer I hang most of the laundry out on our long line.  On the hottest days I can often dry 3 or 4 line loads a day.  Normal days 1 or 2.  Our clothes line holds 3 or 4 washer loads of clothes.  A few times I've forgotten to bring the clothes in at night and it's rained.  After they dried the next day they smell sooo fresh!  It's an amazing smell, no fabric softener can beat that.  Speaking of fabric softener I never use it any more.  I just use 1/4 cup of vinegar now and then.  It softens clothes nicely.

Our laundry room is part of a little extra room downstairs.  It's divided into a 1 piece bathroom, pantry/storage and laundry.  It will eventually be turned into a 2 or 3 piece bathroom and laundry.

I have been making our own laundry soap for 5 years now.  And we love it!!  It is so much cheaper then store brands and cleans much better.  Even dh loves it.  And it's so easy to make.

Homemade Laundry Soap

1 bar of Ivory soap

1 to 2 cups of washing soda

1 to 2 cups of borax

Shred the bar of soap and place in a pot with about 6 cups of water.  Heat until melted but do not boil.

Dissolve washing soda and borax in hot water.  Combine with soap mixture in a 3 gallon bucket and fill with hot water.  Stir.  Done!

I use about a 1/4 cup with my front loader.  When I had a huge top loader I used about 1 cup per load.

Since it doesn't sudes up much it's great on a septic system and works well even in our hard water.
