Q. Have you heard of anyone who has tried the old way of digging a hole and filling it with straw and keeping the potato's in the straw. A. No I don't know anyone who has done it. But I bet it would work just fine as long as they were covered well enough. We often have potatoes grow from ones that didn't get dug up. We get a very heavy snow load so it would be hard from me to try that out. Thankfully our house is very old over 150 years so half the basement is an old dirt cellar. It works great for food storage. Q. Can you post a picture of these bags - we do not raise rabbits, but maybe I could find something similar? also, do you keep them in a cold dark place in addition to the bags? A. Sure I'll take a photo of our storage. But they are just plastic feed bags that almost all feed is sold in. Normally they are a white mesh fabric. You might be able to get a few empty bags from a feed mill that bags their own feed. After we bag the potatoes we tie them shut and put them in the old cellar were it's dark and cool. They keep very well there. |
