This and That

Posted in Just Thoughts

Well Saturday was another snowy day so we called off our trip to the rabbit market.  Hope to go this Sat!  But we did get a few things done over the weekend.  Most of the kitchen cleaned and declutterd, same with the sun porch.  Now it's empty and we can move the living room furniture in there when dh starts the drywall and floors in there.  Took a dump run and picked up some more rabbit feed.  Dh put up another shelf in the pantry for me, yeah more room!

On Sunday I finally cooked up our Christmas turkey.  I was to sick then to do it.  We had turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, and gravy, cold slaw and apple pie.   I've cooked the turkey bones down into a yummy stock and I'll work at canning that tomorrow.  It's so handy to have lots of canned stock on hand!  I use in everything from quick soups and casseroles to cooking rice or making a white sauce.

Today I cooked french fries, with left over turkey meat and cold slaw for lunch.  I still have lots of meat left, some I will can with the stock tomorrow.  Some will be used this week for lunches.

This week I'm also planing to make up a hermin starter.  Anyone ever tried it?  I remember it from when I was a little girl.  It's a "sweet" sour dough starter.   I tried making sour dough bread last year and it came out great.  The only problem is our family just doesn't like the strong sour taste! LOL

I have one left from the holidays that I planned on cooking and I am sooo glad I read your post. I forgot to take it out of the freezer!

Thanks,

Patti

I have a turkey in the freezer that I need to cook too! Maybe I'll get that done next week. I'd like to hear more about the hermin starter.

Blessings to you,

2007-Feb-13 - great un-sour dough starter

Posted by shelley43022

There is a sour dough/herman starter that my grandma used to make. It gets baked into Amish friendship bread. If you look on the website allrecipes.com, they have it and some other uses for it. It is the yummiest bread we have ever eaten, and soooo sweet!
