Q&A - Canning Baby Food

Posted in Questions and Answers

"Do you know anything about canning baby food? I would like to know how to do it, even in small jars, but I don't know a thing about it." - Clairbear

Yes you can, can baby food!  If you don't have a pressure canner then you will only be able to do fruits. You can safely make fruit purees and can them in a water bath canner.   If you have a pressure canner you can do any meat or veggie you like.  All the information I've found has said not to can the meat or vegetables pureed because the processing times for that (thicker) has never been tested.  But you could easily can them and then just mash with a fork or use a little baby food mill to grind it up when your ready to use it.  Remember also that all meat you've canned is suppose to be gently boiled for 10 minutes before eating.

Here are a few sites I found on making baby food.

THANK YOU!!!! last time I had to do this, my child hit solids the same time as fresh produce. this time, it will be mid-winter when she hits solids, and I was afeared that I would have to <gasp> buy baby food. what about salt content? don't veggies have to be canned with salt? can you do it without salt? I know you can do fruits w/out sugar, but....
