Thunder storms
|
We are having our first Spring thunder storm. I like the sound of the rain hitting our tin roof. My dogs don't care for it as much. LOL
Ok question: John will be starting new job soon, and he will be doing shift work. My question to you ladies that have hubby's that do shift work and have kids at home is..... How do you keep them quiet so that your husband can get some sleep when he's working the over night shift?

Hi There, I just read this post eitherwise I would have responded quicker. Shift work is a hard thing to deal with but it does get a little easier over time. My husband works 12 hour contential shifts( days and nights in the same week) and I have two children, two animals and my in-laws live upstairs. To make things more fun I babysit a 15 month old.
One of the first things we do is make sure that my hubby has his earplugs in. They don\'t cut out all of the noise but they do make things easier. We also do things like turn off the phone and have the anwering machine get it and the kids stay out of the area where our bedroom is. Other than that though, it\'s life as usual. Since my hubby has been doing this job for the past 14 years, we have all become used to being quiet on the days when he is in bed. Funny enough, when the kids were much younger and he was in bed, I would take the kids out for the day. My hubby could never sleep well because the house was too quiet...lol. The things a person gets used too.
Good luck to you and your family. I will be thinking of you.

for the response. I have thought about the ear plugs. This is a whole different world for us as he has for the past 14 yrs worked for the same company working 8 am to 5 pm Monday - Friday. But this place is a better place both benefit and money wise and he will be doing what he is actually trained to do. His shift will alternate by the week. He will be doing one week nights that is I believe midnight to 8 or 9 in the morning and do that all week then start with the next shift the next week. It\'s the midnight shift that has me worried as I want him to be well rested. It\'s going to be a big adjustment for sure but one that is worth going through. This job is a prayer answer.

The only suggestion I have is white noise. Keep a fan or even better an air conditioner running in the bedroom while he is sleeping. It will help to dull out the noise from the kids.
One of the biggest problems both Brian and my Mom had (both worked nights for several years) was the light. Make sure you have room darkening shades on the windows taped down if needed. Or put up heavy drapes~I know most people take them down in the summer but you might want to leave the bed room ones up.

We run a fan 365 because I just can't get to sleep without the noise from it. The light is the other issue we have talked about and I think I'm going to get some dark curtain and try those and if that doesn't get it dark enough I have some heavy black plastic here that I Will cover the inside of the windows with that should do it.
