Over the weekend I watched the movie Monalisa Smiles. The movie is based in the 50's at a ladies college, where they taught women to be homemakers as well as other things. There was a teacher there that pushed for women to go another path and work outside the home. She believe that women could do both,be a homemaker and care for her family as well as be a professional woman. But society in those days shunned professional women believing a woman's place is in the home.
Fast forward 2006.....
Now it seems to be the other end of the spectrum. Yes we now have many choices that we didn't have in the past. Why does it feel like we are fighting to have our rights to be in the home not looked at as mundane or foolish. When your in a crowd of women and asked what you do for a living and you say your homemaker or stay at home mom,why do you get the reply "Oh". Then the conversation is promptly stopped and moved to another subject.
So if in the 50's women fought to be able to have choices and respect of them. Whether they wished to work outside the home or stay in the home caring for her family,it was her choice to make. Now we have those choices but the homemaker is looked down on.
So my question is Just how far have we really come in this respect as women?
