All those silly chickens and they won't grow fast enough to be of any help! They are still too small to eat and too young to lay! All they do is eat, eat, eat..............ugh! They smell bad and they are noisy. Hopefully one day they will pay off. On the other hand, I just got some new baby duckies! I bought 4 at Atwoods and then the next day was in there for something else and saw an injured one. I called the salesgirl over there and showed her the sick/injured one. She said they were just gonna "get rid of it" so she gave it to me thinking it was dying. I brought it home, got it dry, got it warm and joined a duck group online for info. Turns out it is a crested something and they have neurological problems! The baby is doing great just really wobbly! She's gonna make it. Especially with help from the nice ppl on the group. These ducks are only for pets though. I DO NOT eat duck!!! I probably will eat whatever eggs they don't sit though. If I even got lucky enough to get girls and a boy. They may be all boys or all girls for all I know! But they sure are cute! I just love ducks! |

Well as if 112 chickens weren't enough, someone gave me 7 more chicks yesterday. I just had to go pick them up. They were in Arkansas, but only about 25 miles from me. They actually live right off the same road I do! Highway 128 turns into 28 as soon as it crosses the state line. I live on 128, they live right off 28. So now I have more chickies. But I am not keeping them all. I have some friends that have lost a few babies so I am sharing with them. As a matter of fact, I will probably only keep 2 or 3 of these and let them have the rest. We'll be sharing them dead or alive so it doesn't really matter! Anyway, we have been blessed with sooooo many chickens!! Thank you Lord! |

Wow! I got my first look today at the equipment that is going to be used at my chicken processing workshop. This equipment is all hand made and is impressive. The chicken plucker looks like a square wringer washer and the cones (there are several of them in a circle) hook onto the side of the plucker. The scalder is also hand made and I have not gotten a look at it, but I was told what it is like. It sounds fascinating, but I don't think I can describe it correctly without having seen it. I can't wait til the workshop. I will be learning too. This workshop is being done at my place by the ppl that own the equipment and know how to use it. I'll be just as lost as everyone else until it is time to can the chicken. Then I'll be on more familiar ground! I am going to have so much fun!! |

Well, I ordered chicks this year because we have the space. A whole separate barn with one side for chickens and the other for rabbits. It has a huge chicken yard with wire on all sides and on top!! So I ordered 100 baby chicks! (What was I thinking?????????) Of course, we couldn't put the chicks in with the other chickens yet so they needed a brooder. And of course, we have no electricity at the barn so it needed to be close to the house. So now I have 3 big u-haul boxes duct taped together to stand straight up with hay and newspaper on bottom all on my front porch! We had to put up plastic all around the porch, put the homemade brooder right in front of the sliding glass door and run 2 heat lamps out there. And we can't close the front door because it gets too cold out there! So now I have 107 baby chicks that are 3 weeks old flapping and flying and stinking all over my porch. eeeewwwww! (even though i ordered 100, Cackle sent 110. i managed to kill 2 through stupidity and the chicks killed the third) I'm just counting down the days til I can put them in the barn and some in the freezer!! And the ones that don't lay well after that will end up in the freezer too!! They were sooooooo cute..........what happened??? |
