The Clothing List
Shared in Around the Homestead
As usual, we have sewing needs. There is always something in need of mending or sewing anew in a large family. There are some days when I wish we could find suitable clothing in the stores. Yes, there are some things to be found here and there, but not many that fit our criteria for modest dressing. (note: if you are finding clothing that suits your desired modesty, congratulations! We watch for things here and there, but generally cannot rely on finding anything in the style we are searching for.)
So, with that in mind, and with our needs at this time, we have sewing sewing sewing to do! Here, off the top of my head, is the clothing needs list...
For the Girls: (for each)
4 day dresses 2 done, 3 cut and ready to stitch!
2 aprons
2-4 church dresses (I'm leaning toward 2!) I am definitely going with only 2
3 slips....youngers will have 4 pairs of bloomer and chemise sets
2 nightgowns
3 veils/kapps.....youngers will have kapp style only
1 cape/poncho for church
So, this means 24 dresses, 6 aprons,10-24 church dresses, 9 slips and 12 bloomer sets, 10 nightgowns, 9 veils/kapps and 9 kapps for youngers, 6 capes/ponchos....whew!
November 14: We have 6 dresses cut, 4 aprons, 2 capes cut and 1 poncho completed. Slow progress, I know, but it's getting there.
For the Boys: (for each)
4 day shirts and jeans....youngers will be mainly overalls
2-3 church shirts
2 church pants
2 church vests
2 pajama sets
6 pair boxer briefs
1 chore coat
And for the boys, it looks like 12 day shirts and jeans, 6-9 church shirts, 6 church pants and vests, 6 PJ sets, 18 boxer briefs and 3 chore coats.
We have a total of 42 day wear outfits/22-33 church outfits, 16 sleepwear sets.....see why I'm leaning toward the lower numbers for each person????? My machine will be humming away non-stop if I'm to complete any of this!
Aside from this, we have needs I'm not making at the current time....sweaters for church, dress shoes, play shoes and mud boots, hats/mittens, work gloves, etc.
A work-in-progress here as is the Homestead Work List....I hope to begin ticking things off here as well!

That's a lot of sewing! Where we live, we have a very limited selection of stores and we cannot find anything appropriate for our girls to wear either. I have a lot of sewing ahead of me as well. :)
I'm curious, are you planning on sewing your sons' clothing too, or will you be purchasing those?
~Peace,
Alie
~~I'm working on the boys. I have their vest pattern with no trouble, but the pants are a bit more difficult....sizing is a bit 'off' with a couple patterns I have. Same with the shirts -- I have a Buckaroo Bobbins shirt we are using and to be honest, collars and cuffs and I dont' seem to play well together ;o(
Thankfully, clothing for the boys is much easier to come by!

I loved reading the list. I, too have a large family with modest clothing needs. I sew my daughters dresses and bloomers. We don't wear head coverings. I find all of my boys clothing at the stores but to find dresses or skirts that are appropriate is almost impossible. Great blog.

Wow! What a List!
I hadn't thought of making a list like that.
I only have 2 girls & 2 boys. I can find things for the boys, I have a friend who gives me things for my younger girl; but, my older 10 yo has to wear women's clothes! She doesn't like it either.
I'm going to work on it this winter. I think a list is a very good idea.
Good wishes for many productive sewing hours!

No indulgences of self will can be trivial, no denial unprofitable; Heaven or Hell depends on this alone. A parent who studies to subdue it in his child works together with God in the renewing and saving of their soul. The parent who indulges it does the devil's work, makes religion impractical, salvation unattainable, and does all that in him lies to damn his child, soul and body, forever.

Our mission in life is not to go to some far-off foreign land, but to work at home and in our churches and home communities. Our goal should not be to leave behind riches and possessions, farms and homes for our children, but a priceless heritage they will cherish enough to work fervently to pass along to their children. It has been done for generations and with God's help it can still be done. In teaching our children, we are striving toward a deep understanding of who they are In Christ.
I am . . . a child of God, a gift to my parents and my country. I'm a person of great value because God made me.
I can . . . do all things through Christ who strengthens me. God has made me able to do everything required of me.
I ought . . . to do my duty to obey God, to submit to my parents and everyone in authority over me, to be of service to others, and to keep myself healthy with proper food and rest so my body is ready to serve.
I will . . . resolve to keep a watch over my thoughts and choose what's right even if it's not what I want.
