If you don't already get The Homeschool Minute weekly newsletter, then you should sign up today .... even if it is just for the Freebies that are included in there each week. You don't have to homeschool to enjoy the thoughts that are shared. This week's issue is about the midwinter blues. Here are the freebie that were posted ... many would make great after school or weekend activities.

The best cure I have found for overcoming the midwinter blues in our homeschool is to do something FUN! Here are some ideas for free activities will boost you out of the blues!
Teach Art At Home is a great website where you can either select from the projects on the website or sign up for the newsletter and get a free lesson plan sent to you via email each month.
Linerider.com is a fun site where you can spend some time creating your own line rider tracks! This is LOTS of fun! You create an online track using a pencil and then let a boy ride his sled on the track you drew. Be careful, it's easy to crash! You can create landscapes, ramps, hills and more. Use your imagination! There are also lots of videos of other peoples creations to watch. If you have kids who like to design things on the computer they will LOVE this!
The Cooking with Kids website offers many great recipes to enjoy in the kitchen with your kids. They even have Easy Bake Oven recipes! (Nothing brightens a winter day more than an Easy Bake Oven! LOL)
Visit the Animal Cams at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park. You can see 20 different animals live on camera!
Find out what foods are associated with your state! Then cook up a few recipes from any state you choose!
Create a Wacky Web Tale. (They will never know they are learning parts of speech!)
Learn some new jump rope rhymes.
Play some online games that help you learn about the Bible. (My favorite is Bible Hangman with the books of the Old and New Testament.)
I hope you found something here that will help you and your kids refocus and get ready for the rest of the school year. Now go make some hot chocolate and enjoy this midwinter day!
Happy Homeschooling,
~Jamin

Sled Dogs Lapbook
Before snowmobiles and 4-wheel drive vehicles, people who lived in the northern regions of the United States, Canada, Greenland, Siberia, Norway, and Finland, relied on teams of dogs to travel in the winter. Sled dogs were able to pull people and freight over areas that were otherwise impossible to cross. Your student can complete a lapbook about these special dogs in the 43-page Sled Dogs Project Pack from In the Hands of a Child. This Project pack includes an 11-page Research Guide and 15 hands-on activities to help your student learn the history, breeds, training, diet, and more about sled dogs.
A $13.99 value, FREE!
... and don't forget to visit The Schoolhouse Store and check out the eBook section. We have added so many E-Books this year that we had to break them up into sub-categories to make them easier to find. One fun new series is Melissa Markham's children's books about the Komodo Dragon, Ruby Throated Hummingbird, and the American Bison.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Some of you may know the Dandelion Seeds blog on Homeschoolblogger.com. If you don't, you should visit her ... she is a totally open book and just blogs what's on her heart! Recently, she decided to offer her eBook, Create in Me a Clean Heart, to her readers for FREE. She has placed a "Donate" button underneath it and I ask that, if you decide to download her wonderful eBook, please pray about it and try to donate to her whatever your heart leads you to. You can order the devotional all printed out and bound for $20 if you don't want to print it out for yourself (it is over 200 pages!). Amy and her husband have had a precarious financial situation for a while now and I know that it would just bless their socks off to receive donations from those that feel led to do so!

From The Homeschool Minute - Homeschool Freebies
Jamin!, Freebie Finder
Since the topic was "a look back", I thought I would share with you a few of my favorite freebie websites from 2007.
Free-411 is one I use all the time! If you are near a computer, you can go to their website and look up a number. If you prefer, you can call 1-800-FREE-411. I have this programmed into my cell phone. You may have to listen to an advertisement before receiving the number, but if you are willing to do that you can save the $1.50 the phone companies charge for information.
Here is a site that provides free homeschool ID cards. Fill out the form on their website and they produce the artwork and email it to you in pdf format. From there you can print it out or even have it laminated. Don't forget to make one for the teacher as well!
Allrecipes.com is a cool site I use a lot. Type in the ingredients you have on hand and it let's you know the recipes you can make!
Here (scroll to bottom of the page) is a great list of ideas for studying spelling words. From putting your words in alphabetical order to writing silly sentences, this list will spice up your spelling study time.
Thebestkidsbooksite.com is a cool website that allows you to type in a topic and it provides you with a list of children's books on that topic. Wow! How helpful is that?!
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
See you next week with more great freebies and special offers!
