Theme Gardens
Theme Gardens are fun and the choices are just about endless. Pick something you enjoy- a food, a scent, a type of herb or flower, even the Bible. Then, choose plants to coordinate with your chosen theme.
For example, in a Pizza Garden I would plant Tomatoes, Bell Pepper, Onions, Oregano, Basil and Garlic.
One of my favorite themes is a Lemon Garden. I love the fresh, clean scent of lemons and there are lots of lemon scented herbs to choose from. For a Lemon Garden, try Lemon Balm, Lemon Verbena, Lemon Thyme, Lemondrop Basil, Lemongrass, Lemon Scented Geranium, and perhaps even a Lemon tree in a pot.
Biblical Theme gardens are also popular. See how many different herbs, flowers, etc. you can find in the Bible, then choose the ones which grow well in your area.
Once you’ve chosen your theme and plants, draw out a design for your theme garden. Perhaps a circle with “slices” of different plants for your Pizza Garden. How about a large container to plant your theme garden in, like a strawberry pot or half barrel? Once you have your design or container, you’re ready to plant and enjoy your garden.
If you have children, give them all their own spot or container and let them choose a theme of their own. Lots of fun and learning there!
