LetÂ’s think about the ordinary acts we do every day- cooking, cleaning, eating, bathing, and sleeping. What else do we do? Love our family, play, garden, create things- the list is different for each of us. These simple things that we often do without thinking much about them at all can become soothing and refreshing rituals if we will take the time to do them thoughtfully, with purpose, and perhaps even prayer.
Let’s take gardening, since it’s one of my favorite things to do. I love to water the plants on the windowsill and front porch. I fill the watering can over and over again instead of just hooking up a hose and squirting away. It’s very soothing to carefully give each little potted plant a drink or a “meal” of fertilizer. This ritual gives me time to really look at, touch, smell, sometimes taste my herbs and flowers- but most of all, just enjoy and be thankful for the beauty and variety of plants that God gave us.
Bathing is another ritual that I very much cherish. I love baths and all the wonderful soaps, bubble baths, bath oils, and other “bath goodies” as I call them. With young children at home, sometimes the bathroom is the only place to hide for a bit of solitude.
Think about your own rituals, and how they are important to you. Why not pick one “ordinary act” and elevate it to an important, pleasing ritual today?
