Going Green For 2008
Posted in Going Green
Hi Everyone!~ Here it is a new year. That just keeps happening...and more quickly with children, I might add. lol! Anyway, in an effort to help Kris here on the Front Porch and to help the earth, I will be heading column devoted to going green. The central focus will be going green on your homestead, however, I will also be lending info on helping your community, business, and teaching children about going green. I have been inspired to continue to step up my family's efforts to walk lightly on the earth. Regardless of your thoughts and opinions regarding global warming, walking lightly on the earth is just good sense. If we want future generations to enjoy the earth as we know it, we need to take care of it.
So, this week I will kick off Going Green with encouraging you to think about recycling your aluminum. If your family already recycles, that is awesome. However, instead of putting your aluminum at the curb, check out your local community charities to see if any of them have a recycling drive. In the past our family has donated to a local fire department, that used all their recyclable donations to help children who are located in a burn unit. Not far from here there is a museum which accepts donations as well. Check out this link on recycling and click on Cans for Habitat to learn how you can help Habitat for Humanity.
My personal favorite way for recycling alumuinum cans, is to reuse them for EVERYTHING! Storage of pens, pencils, paint brushes, rulers, markers, crayons, craft sticks, manicure items, chopsticks, erasers, buttons, etc. I use cans for just about anything that needs a storage container. They are sturdy and FREE! Here is a link to a more detailed post on uses for cans.
So make a commitment to living a more green life this year. Make it a family effort. Don't try to do everything at once, but let's ease into this together.
These are my thoughts.

I just finished reading a book by Eric Sloane called Once Upon a Time. He has several books published by Dover Publications, but they are great because it shows how life used to be so simple and yet items were made to last for generations! I can't wait to read more of his books. I hope to figure out a way to implement the ideas in our own life.

I am going to be looking forward to these articles as one of our goals for this year is to recycle more. We don't buy pop, so that one is in our "reduce" category (reduce, reuse, recycle). I need to figure out a good system for us that will make it easy to be recycling other things... Good luck to everyone in your efforts!!

We recycle our aluminum and our church uses it to help support an orphanage. It is so simple and with all of us doing it very profitable. Now when I see people throw cans away when I am out I cringe! It is amazing how such a small effort can make such a big impact.

Great ideas Leslie! We reduced our need for recycling by simply cutting out soda altogether, but you have some great suggestions for families that want to do something productive with their recyclables!
Also, off topic, but your blog link in your sig line is not working... :(
Thanks again for thinking outside of the (recycling) box! Hehe... ;)
