OK, how are those gardens doing? Are you having a good harvest this season?
Here's a quote that caught my eye this morning:
He that hath a good harvest may be content with some thistles.
Thistles I really wouldn't mind at all because I think they have pretty flowers
.
In spite of having the rainiest spring and summer I can remember, and a very bad beginning to our new garden; the tomatoes have been producing fairly well, we've had plenty of cucumbers for salads, enough green beans for the girls to have a daily snack
and even enough for a family meal or two, the zucchini have done so-so (but you know someone always has squash to share). The herbs have just thrived in the cooler, wet weather, all except for the lavender which is struggling to survive.
This week I plan to remove the tomato plants, beans, cucumbers and squash plants, and add in some compost and manure in preparation for the Fall garden.
OK, fellow gardeners and farmers, your turn to share about your harvest..... Here are a couple of questions for you
!
What has been your gardening success so far this season? Tomatoes that had a horrible start came back to provide luscious salads and tomato sandwiches....YUM!
What hasn't turned out as you had hoped? Lots, but my Yellow Crookneck Squash really did not do well- I think I only harvested 2 or maybe 3 little squash from 3 plants
. Praise the Lord for the generosity of others- we've had more than enough squash anyway
!
I hope some of you will share your answers with us.
Have a great gardening week!
Blessings,
Catherine

We had a good garden this year although it still did not come close to last years success. Our tomatoes are producing richly, but we did not put the straw down this year that we did last, and we had some blight the past month or so. We have been really learning about all of this the past few years and have been told that the water splashing up from the ground causes the blight. We learned ourselves that putting lime in the soil keeps the blight at bay. I am telling you it works!! Our peas did not take this year for some reason and last year they were in abundance. We have zucchini in abundance, but we are battling striped cucumber beetles for them. We spray and it seems to calm down for a while. We notice that those zukes grow FAST!! Squash is good and spreading all over. We might have to rein it in and cut some of the vines. Lots of peppers and carrots and we did have lettuce and spinach. I think we will replant a fall crop of the cool crops. We have the soil ready to go for that already. Our strawberries this year were smaller and sporatic. We had a late freeze so they were set back. Lots of onions too. I also grow herbs and need to get them in so they don't go to waste. That is how it is for now!! Smiles, Linda

In spite of the HEAT and Humidity we have been having, most of the garden has been doing great! The tomatoes are producing super abundantly, the jalpenos, banana peppers, green peppers are over producing (so I have been freezing them for winter use) and the beets, and other thigns are doing great. Only thing I have had a problem with is the cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts and lettuces...they are pretty much over and done with since the heat started in May and they really never produced much for us this year. Oh well, there's always next year!
Got more beets. lettuces and spinach planted for fall harvest and it all sprouted in two days! These are (so far) doing great!
