What is the best way to keep from tearing up when cutting onions? The National Onion Association recommends chilling onions in the freezer for 30 minutes prior to slicing. Also, always cut the shoot end off and peel the onion first, leaving the root end intact, when slicing or chopping. The highest concentration of the sulfer compounds that cause the tearing are found in the root end of the onion.

How crazy is this...usually I tear like mad when cutting onions. It just dawned on me...early this morning when cutting onions for a macaroni salad...I didn't tear. I also wasn't focused on cutting the onions but had my mind on other things (like what else I was going to put in the macaroni salad)...wonder if not thinking about cutting onions helps with no tears...?
Vadalia onions from GA are sweet and don't make me cry.
