Chiggers

I know last week, Scarecrow shared about his battle with poison ivy. Well my battle this week has been more with chiggers!

Grandma Rosie introduced me to the Organic Homesteading & Gardening Yahoo group a while back and they've recently been sharing their tips for dealing with chiggers too.

I thought I'd post some of their suggestions here for you all along with some other helpful links.

Wipe the area with Apple Cider Vinegar. Let it set for 10 minutes. Rinse off. Soak in Epsom Salt.

Repellent Recipe
1/2 c olive oil
1 c hot water
1/8 c glycerine
35 drops lavender (mosquitoes)
25 drops patchouli (chiggers)
30 drops neem (ticks, mosquitoes)
Put a 1/2 cup of bleach in a full bath tub to kill chiggers. *For adults only.*

We have battled chiggers, ticks and those little sand fleas here for 2 years now with very little relief. I am anxious to try anything and everything that may help. Wonderful tips and links!

That is one thing I'm ever so grateful here...no ticks, no chiggers! We do have mosquitos. And while some of them appear to be larger than the ones in the rice fields of Southeast Missouri where I grew up, they don't seem to be as mean as the southern mosquitos. When we were on our retreat last weekend they were swarming everywhere but I think I only got about 2 bites out of the whole weekend.

Now, our friends' son got eaten up. So maybe he's just sweeter than me and my crew. ;)

Yep, the poison ivy is finally starting to dry up a bit because of the calamine lotion I decided to use, you might say it was a RASH decision... LOL

My family has found that the best way to get rid of chiggars is to put a little clear nail polish on te spot where the chiggars are.
