Water is the best solvent known to man. By far, the greatest ingredient by volume in most of the cleaners we buy from the store is water. This is how I get water to work for me in cleaning my kitchen, and save money (and my septic system, thus my homestead) by using the least amount of chemicals as possible. This is gentler on my hands, too!
When I start cleaning my kitchen after a meal, I first fill my sponge with water, then drizzle the water out over any spilled food or stains on my stove and counters. I let the water sit for 15 minutes while I wash dishes and do my other cleaning up chores. After 15 minutes, I go back and wipe up my stove and counters. The water will have dissolved most spills, even dried on or greasy messes, after 15 minutes. I save my degreasing cleaner for the tough jobs that do not clean up with a 15-minute water soak, and I use a LOT less cleaner this way.
