I'm always interested in learning how others tackle the inevitable pests that show up in the garden. Gardeners are creative folks and often think up some very unique pest control methods
.
I saw a couple of ideas on the Victory Garden site that I like-
Bug Bouncer-
Using a long handled spatula or spoon and a bucket of warm soapy water, hold the bucket under the buggy area, and gently smack the flower with the utensil. The bugs should bounce right into the bucket of suds. I think the kids would enjoy this; if I could just be sure they wouldn't kill the flowers in the process
.
Another tip was to tie a bag to the mouth of a large funnel. You can make your own funnel by cutting the bottom off a large bottle. Sneak up on those squash bugs and other nasty beetles, hold the funnel under the leaf they are hiding under, give the plant a shake and the bugs should drop off into your funnel and end up in the bag. Tie up the bag (tightly) and toss it in the trash can. I think I'll let my husband test this one first.... I'm not sure what I would do if they came crawling out of the bag after me
!
Squash bugs are nasty critters
. I usually zap them with a soap and water spray to which I've added a shake or two of cayenne pepper- gets 'em every time
.
Anyone else have a home remedy or pest control idea for the garden? Please share with us!
Blessings,
