The Goat Midwife Kit
Kidding season is here!! This is my favorite time of year as a goat owner. A few weeks before their due dates I pull out my goat midwife kit which I keep packed in a plastic tote. I check to make sure I have everything ready to go. When the time comes and my mama goats go into labor, I grab my kit and head to the barn.
Here is a list of things I include in my bag:
~ Towels- I use towels to help dry off newborn kids. If it is cold out, it is good to be able to help warm them up.
~ 7% Iodine for dipping cord
~ Small container to use for cord dipping. I pour the iodine in the container and then dip their umbilical cord (navel) in this. Small paper cups work well. You can just toss them when you are done.
~ Scissors
~ Surgical type gloves
~ Soap and clean buckets to wash in case I need to help the mom out
~ Goat sweaters for the newborns if it is cold out
One last thing I get ready is molasses. After the doe has her kids I give her a special treat of warm water and molasses. This gives the mama goat a little extra boost after all her hard work.
