10 Household Items That Do Double-Duty
Surprise Uses for Everyday Things!

Make good on your New Year’s Resolution of saving money and space in your home by checking out these household items that have multiple uses!

1. Remove crayon marks with WD-40. The next time your little one goes wild writing on your walls, don’t stress! Instead pull out WD-40. This household product, that you usually use to stop squeaky hinges, also works brilliantly in removing crayon marks from most surfaces. Simple spray and wipe crayon right off. (You may also want to wipe surface with a soapy rag to remove any oil residue.)

2. Clean your toilet with Alka Seltzer. So you’re having friends for dinner in 20 minutes, and you’ve just noticed your grimy toilet? No worries, drop in a couple of tablets Alka Seltzer, leave for ten minutes then easily wipe scum away! The fizzing action of Alka Seltzer works as a powerful cleaning agent, so you don’t have to get your hands dirty.

3. Use dryer sheets to freshen stinky shoes. Good News: You’re making good on your promise to hit the gym every day. Bad news: You’re running shoes and gym bag smell to high heaven!

Until you can give them a good wash this weekend, air out those bad boys by stuffing dryer sheets in them and leaving over night. The sheets will absorb the odor so you can hit the gym tomorrow, odor free!

4. Keep your earrings together with buttons. Tired of rummaging through your jewelry box to only find one of your favorite earrings? Keep them easily paired by looping them through button holes. Not only does this work on hanging earrings and studs, but it’s an easy way to keep your earrings stored when traveling.

5. Wine bottles can make your boots stand upright. Make use of those leftover holiday wine bottles by cleaning them out and placing them into your boots to keep their shape. The average wine bottle works in almost every boot, and they won’t stretch them out like some shoe shapers can.

6. Lemon and salt can shine copper and brass. Next time you throw a dinner party, impress your friends by pulling out Granny’s good copper candle holders. To shine in a pinch, grab a half a lemon dipped in salt and rub over the candle sticks (or any other copper or brass item) then polish with a soft cloth dipped in water.

Voila! Your table is set.

7. Makeup brushes can clean your keyboard. Like it or not, we all too often eat lunch at our desks. And even if we’re good about cleaning our area, inevitably we drop crumbs in our keyboard. Gross!

An easy way to clean our keyboards is by wiping them with makeup brushes. The cheap ones are fine, and small or large, they work like a charm.

9. Shave your legs with olive oil. Ran out of shaving cream? Well, there’s something in your kitchen that can help you out: olive oil. Because, olive oil is thicker than you think, it works well on coating your legs or face giving you a nice shave without razor burn. And because it’s so moisturizing, you won’t even need to apply lotion afterwards!

10. Lotion can be used to shine shoes. On your way into a meeting and noticed your scuffed shoes? Pull out that tiny bottle of hand lotion and quickly rub on your shoes. Not only does it work especially well on the tips of pointy shoes, but you can make your shoes last longer by keeping the leather soft and supple.
