hot tea with honey
hot peppermint tea, to be specific
The peppermint helps to relax the throat, and the honey coats it to soothe it.

Hot tea with honey and lemon. Sometimes I'll also take some lemon juice and add it to hot water and honey. It can be sour, but if you add enough honey it isn't too bad.

Sep. 27, 2006 - Ditto the lemon
Posted by bethsbrightside
One of my roomies used to make a "hot lemonade" that was so soothing when I had a cold. With TLC she steeped a half lemon cut in wedges in about 16 oz. of hot water. She would squeeze out each wedge and put it back in until she finished the others, letting some of the oil escape. Then added honey to taste, a goodly amount.
It kind of burns on a sore throat at first, but it helps and the heat feels so good. Funny thing is, I can't make it like she did. Another tea similar is half and half vinegar/honey. Put as much as you can stand...a spoon or two...in hot water and drink. I think the antiseptic properties help kill off some of the bad germies.
Feel better!

Put some Eucalyptus Oil in a pan of water or in an Aroma Therapy lamp....and get your blankie....and a hot cup of chamomile/honey tea.....and call it a day.
Or if you can stomach it....a good chicken enchilada with salsa.....or roast beef with horseradish...oh wait--thats for me, the pregnant lady....lakjsd;flkajs
Feel Better Nancy!

Sep. 27, 2006 - Honey in lemon juice
Posted by melm
My great-grandmother used to just give me spoonfuls of honey and lemon juice, straight. (I do believe she preferred her own treatment in a cup of something "stronger", though.)
Lisa's not far off on the spicy food, though. I've noticed that if I've got a stuffy nose and drainage at the same time, I can clear some of it by eating salsa (hotter than my normal mild) or enchiladas/tacos etc with spiced meat. Even a salad with pepperoncinis might do it. The heat and spice clear my sinuses and once that happens, the drainage stops.
Barring that, I'd go for hot cocoa or tea. Same concept, but minus the spices. Plus chocolate cures all...Right?

Gargle with warm salt water several times daily. Use the Vicks vapor rub on your chest at night when you go to bed - keep cough drops (I like the lemon) going during the day - use the ones with ??menthol?? or do they call it mentholyptus?? - something like that.
Must eat HOMEMADE chicken soup for 3 days. Move further south - just down the road from me and I'll make the soup and bring it to you.
And when I was a little girl I always heard my grandmother tell my Daddy - a shot of whiskey with honey and lemon won't hurt.........!
:)
Feel better soon!

I make a toddy mix for the cold season, but you have to make it up ahead.
recipe:
1 pint vodka in a quart jar
add 1 ounce dried horehound
mix well and let soak for two weeks or more
strain into a clean dark jar for storage
to use:
mix 1/2 ounce of this with 1/2 ounce of water as hot as you can stand and drink slowly.
This tastes terrible, but works wonders.
you could add the honey and lemon, too.
Best wishes,
Hope you feel better!

I have to agree with most others... lemon and honey. When my oldest daughter was a baby she had this wonderful country doctor... and he said to do the lemon and honey with a tad bit of bourbon.

Thank you for all of your suggestions. I'm still all stuffy, but I'm doing the tea, honey, lemon type suggestions and contemplating moving closer to Harriette to get that homemade chicken noodle soup, and stopping to buy some horehound on the way!
You all are a wealth of suggestions and encouragement. What a blessing!
