Yes earthworms, I suppose, could be considered part of the homestead barnyard. They certainly go beyond what we would think of as “livestock” but they can be raised and do serve a purpose on a homestead.
I just finished reading a wonderful article on line called: “My Grandfather's Earthworm Farm” http://journeytoforever.org/farm_library/oliver/oliver_farm.html . This is a very interesting story of a man who had a 160 acre self-sustaining homestead and it tells how earthworms played a large role in his farms success. I also enjoyed the story for its look at a well running homestead of years ago.
At the end of the article was information and lessons on earthworm farming. This article also included information on the potential earthworm market as a business if you would want to include earthworms as part of your homestead barnyard!
