When
The challenge for homesteaders that own livestock on their farms is “who’s gonna tend to the animals while we are gone?”
That said, I thought I would survey everyone here to find out how many families owning livestock are able to vacation, how often and what arrangements do you make in order to do so. Even if you don’t take an annual vacation, there are times when out of town travel is necessary (i.e. death in the family, family illness, weddings, family reunions, work related travel, etc.). So how do you prepare for days away from the homestead and family farm? Do you pay someone or do you swap out with other farmers in your area?
We have recently made arrangements with a family that buys eggs from us that is willing to come twice a day to let the chickens out and put them up in the evenings, feed and water our dogs as well as our cats. But if we add goats next year or other livestock – even one or two – I am uncertain that they will be able to accommodate the arrangement that we have now.
Has anyone ever set up and participated in a vacation co-op with other family farms and homesteaders? Please leave a comment or blog about what you and your family do for out of town travel and the arrangements for your animals back at the ol’ home place. Be sure to leave a link to your post.
Thanks,
