Hobby Farms magazine has an interesting article in their September/October 2006 issue that addresses how folks with property and time to spare can get on the "Agritourism Wagon" to bring in some extra cash or build a prosperous business. They suggest the following five ideas and give some great reasons to get started, as well as the basic methods to get you going. Their top five include: pick your own & farmers' markets, seasonal events (such as harvest festivals and Winterfests), a vacation ranch, a bed & breakfast, and educational tours.
I can see this working especially well for those of you who are homeschooling families, or those who are working an organic farm. After all, what better way to share your lifestyle and help others begin their own more healthful journeys than to let them jump right in, dig in the dirt, harvest some organic goodies, make soap, shave sheep, muck stalls -- you name it! You may not make millions, but you may very well make friends and learn a few things yourself, while also getting some help around the 'stead.
Don't forget that any business venture on your property must be treated as such, no matter how small you start out or intend to remain. Check with your insurance agent regarding any policy changes that must be made, especially to liability coverage. Check with your local Chamber of Commerce, your accountant, and your attorney, regarding legal and financial issues to cover, advertising options to consider, and ways to really network and get your homestead buzzing with whatever will draw the crowds. (Or flocks. Or whatever you desire!)
