The most basic of all quilt blocks is the classic Nine Patch. It’s easy to do with our 2” strips. I like to alternate Nine Patch blocks with plain background blocks of the same size. This pattern is known as the Single Irish Chain. I used it for the red and white pillow shown above.
Start with two sets of 2” strips – Darks and Lights. You will need about the same number of strips in each set. They don’t need to be full length strips. Using ¼” seam allowances, sew two different kinds of panels. You will need TWICE AS MUCH total length of the Dark-Light-Dark panel as you will of the Light-Dark-Light panel. Press the seam allowances toward the dark strips.

Cut 2” slices of the panels. Begin by lining up the panels on the lines of the cutting mat and cutting a straight, square edge.

You will need TWICE AS MANY slices of the Dark-Light-Dark panel as you will of the Light-Dark-Light panel.

Arrange the slices in piles as shown.
Sew the three units together to create the Nine Patch block. Press. If you have cut, sewn and pressed correctly, the block will measure 5” X 5” at this point, so if you want to use it as I did, cut 5” squares of light fabric and sew them alternately with the pieced blocks.

For this one, I appliqued hearts on the plain blocks:
