Create a fun and free plant support for your pole beans, gourds, or other climbing plants, by making a tripod out of branches. My husband made 3 of these for our last garden from prunings from one of the trees in our yard. He took three 7 foot long branches (give or take a few inches) that were fairly straight and about an inch or so in diameter, poked one end in the soil and lashed them together with garden twine at the top. Then, we wound more twine all around the tripod for the beans and birdhouse gourds to grow up. The beans and gourds soon covered them and we had not only a nice support for the plants- they just made the garden look pretty, too. They were quick to make, free, and looked very primitive country cute in the garden. When it was time to move, I just pulled them up and tossed everything on the brush pile to be burned. These are definitely on our "must have" list for our next garden.
For less aggressive climbers, try using a single branch that has several forks and smaller limbs on it. A tomato cage turned upside down will also work well for smaller plants.
Be creative, have fun- and please, please share your ideas with us!
