Freezers can be a great money saving tool. However, like our refrigerators, if we don't eat the food in a timely manner, it will go bad causing us to throw it out. Thus a waste of money for running the unit and the cost of the food. Here's a great idea to keep track of what you have.
I keep an inventory of my freezer. When I freeze something, be it soup, a casserole, or meat directly from the butcher, I write it down. Over the years I developed an inventory list where I can easily just check off what I have.
In the same vain, when I take something from the freezer, I mark it off my inventory. If it is something I will need to replace, I put it on my shopping list. This helps make shopping the sales a breeze. For example, if a sale comes on roasts, I look at my inventory. If I have 3-4 in the freezer, I pass on the sale. However, if I have only 1 left, I will buy a few. A sale is only a money saver if you use the items you purchase.
Over the years I have fine tuned my list to include premade foods such as lasagna, casseroles, quiche, etc. This helps me keep an eye on "fast food" so I know when I need to make more.
These are my thoughts.
