My Funny Farm story
Posted in Homestead 101
Oh my, there are so many of them! We are totally the city mice, gone to the country sort of folks. It's the little things that still catch us off guard. Like trying to catch a chicken....
Well we looked out the window this morning and guess what we saw....

Our barred rock chicken sitting on TOP of the chicken tractor. Not sure how that happened, but we give the chicken credit for steering clear of the dogs.
However Mrs. Houdini wasn't real willing to be helped back into the pen. In fact the goofy thing decided to try and roost on our Mastiff's back. Not a good idea. Chicken Run #1 Ensued! This time I was able to survive just by holding onto her collar. Tony wasn't home so PVC didn't get involved.

Jake, however, got to be a hero and saved the day by catching Mrs. Houdini! These kids of mine are so doggone helpful. I'm glad God gave them to me and the Mr. Jake has today been officially dubbed "
The Great Chicken Catcher of Allegre"
Anyway, I decided to get a few pictures while I was out there. Here's a picture of the chicken tractor that Tony & the boys built.
Here is a picture of one of our meatbird chickens, named Godzilla, with a hen we have named "Little Red". Amazing that they are the same age, huh?

Jake got those two back in the chicken tractor and we decided to see if we could get some pictures of some of the other hens. Are there any more chicken folks left over here or did they all jump ship and head over to HomeSteadBlogger? Can you all tell me what breeds these 4 little ones are? They don't look like the pictures in the catalog.

And after I snapped a few pictures, two of these spunky little hens decided to do Chicken Run 2, The Sequel. This one however felt as long as the Titanic with the sun beating down on ya chasing these crazy chicks. Each of them hid in different bushes. They are quite tricky little critters. But after much chasing, circling around trees, cornering and general amateur chicken catching strategies, Jake the Great Chicken Catcher of Allegre aided by Jon the Kind and Good Helper, caught those chickens and returned them back to their home sweet chicken tractor.
And they all lived happily ever after!

How hysterical, we have been having similar chicken situations. Unfortunately yesterday we found out that the dog did get one of them! :( We are city folk too, but my girls are become expert chicken catchers!
Oh yeah, those unidentified chickens looks similar to our sex link ones, only I thin ours are red and those are golden. You can google "Golden Sex Link" on google images and see! Its a little hard to tell for sure from the picture!
