With canning season being right around the corner......(well it's all year long---but we really rev up on canning from late Spring and Summer, into early Fall! One of the must have’s for safe canning is a Ball Blue Book. You can order it here online : http://www.homecanning.com/usa/ALOrder.asp?P=2576. You can also get one at a Wal Mart or anywhere that sells canning supplies. It costs about $4-5.00, and is well worth the investment for safe canning.
You can also get more info on canning in general at www.homecanning.com- the official site for Ball and Kerr Mason Jar company.
And because Spring is here....so are garage sales--perfect for finding canning 'treasures'!
If you want to look for canning treasures on the cheap, you can find water bath canners (I need to find one more) jars (always inspect for nicks in the glass or cracks first though!) canning tongs are very nice to have too. One reminder, I would always buy my lids & collars NEW, they are cheap and ensure the seal, which is what keeps the food properly! I personally would never buy a pressure canner used, either--you want to ensure safety, seals and pressure....and used is not the way I would go on this investment.
Enjoy putting food by for yourself and your family...there is a certain satisfaction that comes from canning...we truly enjoy it.
Happy Canning!
