Mmmm.... Turkey, Sweet Potatoes and What else?
Posted in Sharing Recipes
I know we all must be thinking in the same direction... I mean we are just about a month away from Thanksgiving and 2 from Christmas. I am gearing up towards both and I am sure you are too.
So when you prepare your Holiday meals what are the dishes you always make?
Is there something unusual, something that is not a traditional item? Something you would like to share with other readers?
For our Holiday meals, we have the traditional ham and turkey. Sweet Potatoes, cranberry relish, corn, beans... the usual.
This year, I want to bring something a bit unusual. When I say bring, I have never had a big Holiday dinner at my home... sad, I know. We have always went to my Mom's and my husbands grandmothers for our dinner... Mom fixes the meat and we bring the fixings.
So share with us, what do you make for your dinners?
As usual, I will compile a list afterwards of everyones menu and recipes that have been provided.
From my Homestead to Yours,

Oct. 20, 2008 - Our Thanksgiving meal...
Posted by imspecl
We have the traditional - Roast Turkey, mashed spuds, gravey, spaghetti squash, acorn squash, green bean casserole, I make homemade dinner rolls, cranberry sauce, pickles, black olives, watermellon pickles (my personal favorite!) and of course pumpkin, chocolate and apple pie. Ohhhh, I'm drooling now LOL. If anyone needs a recipe, I'll gladly share.

Posted by Vickie
We usually have:
baked turkey
cornbread dressing
mashed potatoes w/gravy
green bean casserole
buttered corn
homemade rolls
cranberry sauce
Dessert:
pecan pie
pumpkin pie
When we used to go to relatives & we all brought something, we had a few other things...Homemade maccaroni & cheese, hominy casserole & a broccoli casserole my sister-in-law always makes & won't share the recipe. It is in a white type sauce covered with swiss cheese, buttered breadcrumbs & baked. (Real good)

Oct. 30, 2008 - Here's a twist. . .
Posted by elliepea
Here's a twist, we are vegan and love to celebrate Thanksgiving with all of the traditional fare - sans any animal products! Quite a feat!
We have:
Stuffing made with whole grain breads and filled with pieces of homemade seasoned gluten pieces
Mashed potatoes with nutritional yeast flakes for a cheesy flavor (very yummy!)
Gravy - let's see. . . made from potato water and ground cashews with a vegan beeflike seasoning - or no cashews for a clear gravy
Sweet potatoes - no problem here, just leave off the marshmallows
Green beans
Baked beans - no bacon
Macaroni and "Cheese" - the sauce is ground cashews and pimientos - or I could use my coconut milk recipe this year for cheese sauce. . .
Orange 'Jello' salad - switch the Jello for a vegan gelatin version - not quite as good, but still great
The usual olives, pickles, etc.
Pumpkin pie - either a tofu version - or an almond milk version thickened with corn starch. As long as you use the Libby recipe, it turns out great every time. (My daughter-in-law is allergic to soy, so we have to be careful when she is around.)
Mince pie - made with raisins, nuts, etc.
Apple pie - sweetened with apple juice
Whatever else shows up - we have a very large family and sometimes we have as many as fifty or more for Thanksgiving dinner. . .

We usually have the traditional dinner with turkey, corn, mashed potatoes, stuffing, some kind of bread, cranberry sauce, and red cabbage ( a special treat reserved just for holidays). For desert we usually have pumpkin pie and homemade cheese cake (another favorite just for holidays).
